10 Things I Love About Medium
b5media’s Science and Health channel had a theme day yesterday where all bloggers in that channel wrote a Top Ten List. I liked the idea so much I wrote one of my own. Here are the Top Ten things I love about the show Medium, in no particular order:
1. THE MEN. SEXY sums them all up quite nicely, I think:
-
Joe DuBois: Who knew boxers and a t-shirt could be so drool-inspiring?
Det. Lee Scanlon: Gruff yet funny and tender equals irresistable.
D.A. Manuel Duvalos: Fair-minded, open-minded (he listens to a medium for crying out loud), enforcer of The Law with an ever-present undercurrent of smoldering latin machismo. Hubba hubba.
Defense attorney Larry Watt: Now stay with me on this one! Yes, he’s creepy and revolting in all ways but I discovered the actor who plays him (Conor O’Farrell) has a recurring role on CSI and guest starred on Star Trek: Enterprise. For some reason I like him better knowing that. Besides, everyone else on the show is perfectly nice (yawn). It is important to have someone spit-worthy every once in a while.
2. THE DEAD PEOPLE
-
The idea that maybe…just maybe…some part of us hangs around for a while after we die, well that fascinates me. I like to see who has ended up dead each week and what’s on their mind. Frankly, I’m surprised more of them aren’t pissed. My biggest question is: how do they know about Allison? Are there flashing lights in the afterlife leading to her bedroom, like the floor lighting on airplanes leading to the emergency exits? These are the things I wonder about when I can’t sleep at night.
That, and what kind of underwear Lee Scanlon wears. I’m hoping for boxerbriefs but I’m pretty sure it’s regular boxers. ::sigh::
3. HELMET GIRL
- How cute is Bridgette? She’s precocious and intelligent and has that whole pre-teen psychic thing going for her. And she’s so sensible. Do they make kids like that in real life? If not, I don’t want to know. I shall simply adore her and pretend she is real.
4. THE NORMALCY
- The Dubois family sits around in pajamas when they are at home just like real people do. They don’t cook breakfast but rather have cold cereal…just like real people do. The girls bicker. The parents disagree. There are money issues. Feels like home to me.
5. YIN AND YANG
- The psychic and the engineer. (Aren’t there appliance commercials out there touting the benefits of this sort of marriage? I am picturing a buttoned-up male scientist standing next to a hippie chick, complete with afro and tie-dye bell-bottoms.) It’s fun to watch the give and take between the metaphysically quirky Allison and her scientifically grounded husband Joe. I’d like to hear the story about how they achieved that delicate balance.
6. THE POSSIBILITY OF PSYCHIC POWERS
- Oh sure, psychic power would make your life miserable, all those dead people wanting you to deliver messages or track down their killers, but how much fun could you have with your powers between dead-people gigs? Knowing when the car repairman was lying to you. Winning the big jackpot with your “randomly” selected lottery numbers. Avoiding three hours of gridlock hell because you just felt like taking surface streets for some reason. The fun-portunities are endless!
7. THE DIALOGUE
-
The writers crack me up. Don’t they crack you up? Example [Joe and Ariel are both trying to talk to Allison at once]:
Ariel Dubois: This is completely unfair! I had her first, Dad.
Joe Dubois: No, point in fact, I had her first or else you wouldn’t be here.
And that is just one tiny example.
8. QUIRKY STORY LINES
- Allison has a psychic connection across time with a woman in 1959 who has been committed to a mental institution because she claims she is the Allison Dubois of 2005 and knows true facts about Allison’s 2005 life…back in 1959. Brilliant. BRILLIANT!
9. THE GUEST STARS
- Molly Ringwald, Chad Lowe, Richmond Arquette (Patricia’s brother), to name a few. Patricia hopes to have all her siblings guest star on the show eventually. Personally, I’d like to see Haley Joel Osment blow into town as a teenage Cole Sear from A Sixth Sense, trying to kick a nasty marijuana habit developed over years of playing patsy to all those needy dead people that he sees all the time.
10. CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
- The show isn’t just about Allison. We see Joe at his engineering firm, where we get to meet some of his coworkers and share some his personal and professional stress. We see the girls at school and how being different affects their relationships with teachers and other kids. Next season, I hope they dig a little deeper into the backgrounds of D.A. Duvalos and Detective Scanlon. Lee needs a girlfriend, for example. (Pick me! Pick me!)
So there you have it, my top ten favorite things about Medium. I bet you have some of your own. I’d love to hear about them!

So she wants all her siblings to guest does she?
Hmmm…I wonder how she’ll work trannie sister Alexis into the show? Betcha she shows up as a dead trannie hooker who can’t rest in peace because she never got her penis lopped off.

Awwww. For the record, Maral is not related to me and I did not pay her to say that. :) Thanks Maral!
