Are Allison’s sunglasses in “The Future’s So Bright” an homage?

November 19, 2009 by Kona Gallagher

It’s kind of funny how many people have commented (including myself) on how goofy Allison’s sunglasses look in this week’s episode, “The Future’s So Bright.” They’re white plastic glasses that look a lot like the original Ray-Ban Wayfarers.

Then, the more I looked at them, the more they seemed familiar…

Don’t they look a lot like the blue sunglasses that Arquette donned when she played Alabama Whitman in True Romance?

true romance 19930910_yat_g90_611In fact, a lot of people online do in fact refer to the sunglasses she wears in the movie as Wayfarers. Now, whether they are actual Wayfarers or simply generics styled to look like them (which is probably the case, as I couldn’t see either of these characters spending $130 on sunglasses), the two photos are quite reminiscent of each other, no?

Of course, Allison does generally wear a lot more clothing than Alabama did.

The glasses look exactly the same. Except the color!

  2. Gina says:

They may look a little similiar to the blue ones Alabama wore since they both look to be cheap plastic glasses. I have noticed the white plastic glasses to be in style with the teen girls last summer and the summer before. I would never wear them myself but have seen teens wearing them to the beach. They sell them at stores like Target. Don’t know how Allison ended up with that style.

Interesting point, Kona. I hadn’t thought of that. It could be. But I liked the blue ones okay. The white ones, however, just don’t sit that well with me for some reason. I can’t quite put my finger on it, though. Just something that seems off about them. Or her in them, I can’t figure out which. Oh, well, they could be a lot worse.

  4. Lina says:

Yes, they look almost the same, exept the color. But I don’t think that Allison should wear those sun-glasses, not her style at all! It’s more a teenage style, Ariel may look better in them. But who know, mayby it is Ariels? And Allison just borrowed them?

  5. Kelly says:

Agree those glasses don’t look right on Allison. They are more fitting for the teenagers and college crowd. Maybe she found them.

I did read courtesy of google alerts that the episode was to a scifi classic (that I’ll be honest and say I hadn’t heard of) called ‘They live’.

On the subject of Alabama, I was browsing a gossip magazine at work today and one of Robert Pattinson’s favourite things was Patricia Arquette alongside the piano and reality television. She was his childhood pin-up, starting 15 years old when he watched True Romance. I think the picture of Patricia might have been from True Romance but I couldn’t be sure.

  8. Linda says:

I meant 15 years ago, not old. The magazine was New, not sure if they’re online, although it was only a tiny snippet of an explanation.
