Ratings for Medium 6×07 “New Terrain” – Another off night

November 7, 2009 by Kona Gallagher

Granted, my theory that last week’s ratings lows were based on people being out at Halloween parties wasn’t entirely serious, but I did believe that the low ratings were an anomaly. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case, as Medium scored the same ratings as it did last week, and for the first time, lost the hour.

medium 6x07

Scoring a total viewership of 7.6 million, and a 1.8 in the 18-49 group, Medium lost the 9:00 hour to a special two-hour episode of Law & Order. L&O garnered 8.0 million and a 1.8 at 8:00, but grew its audience in the second hour, ending up with 8.4/1.9. This is the first time all season that Medium has been up against a new scripted episode, and the first time it did not win in its time slot. The two hour episode really worked for Law & Order, as it significantly raised its ratings from last week, in which they only garnered 7.0 million total viewers and 1.4 in the 18-49 group at 8:00.

Unfortunately, the bad ratings news continues for Medium, as it was also the lowest-rated out of CBS’s Friday night lineup. While it has been trading first and second place with Ghost Whisperer, Medium has consistently pulled in higher numbers than Numb3rs. However, once again, Numb3rs beat Medium, but just barely. While it came out ahead in total viewers with 8.1 million, it tied in the 1-49 demographic with 1.8.

The good news, is that despite Law & Order’s impressive gain in viewers and ABC’s episode of 20/20 featuring an interview with Rihanna about her abusive ex-boyfriend Chris Brown, which trounced everything else in the 10:00 hour, CBS still won the night. They easily beat the other networks in total viewers, and tied with ABC for the 18-48 demo (the 20/20 interview scored a whopping 2.7). So even though Medium may have taken a little dip, there’s no cause for real alarm quite yet. However, if CBS doesn’t continue to win the night, then we may have something to worry about.

Is sad because last night was a great episode but i believe that medium is gonna winning the night next week thats for sure, i believe in this show and the diferences of the number is not BIG !! But i still i little worry, lets see the DVR numbers

I just hope that the small drop in numbers doesn’t get the show cancelled. Unfortunately, networks are sometimes too quick in dropping good TV shows.

  3. Mike says:

That is pretty disappointing… Really all three shows (Ghost Whisperer, Medium, and Numb3rs) have been pretty blah so far this year. Besides the season 6 opener there really hasn’t been any episodes that compare to the usual. I feel as tho the creativness is lacking so far this year, and even the upcoming episodes don’t sound all that unique. I am waiting for one of those blow you away episodes like Doctors Orders, We Had a Dream, A Wicked Game, or The Devil Inside. Ghost Whisperer, as a lead in, is not helping Medium at all either. Ariel’s boyfriend thing should be good I hope. So far I have figured out all the episodes half way thru because it’s always the nice person in the beginning… Lol. Not that the episodes haven’t been good, they just haven’t been as good as they usually are.

  4. Dawn says:

Wow, guess that goes to show that shameless product placement doesn’t equal ratings. Guess nobody wanted to tune it to watch an hour-long car commercial. Which is sad, because the ep was great. Very creative with the way the radio tuned in to other people’s conversations. Shows that this does still have some life in it. Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s gonna live to see another season. No more miracle saves like last season. Face it. This is probably the last season of Medium, which breaks my heart. But it’s getting no better treatment at CBS than at NBC now. CBS enjoyed their little coup of snatching it out from under NBC’s nose, but the bloom is off the rose now. It’s just another Friday night show breathing its last gasp. Get ready to say bye-bye to Medium.
    Darn shame too.

  5. Linda says:

So L&O was a special episode, like a to-be-continued, meaning viewers would be daft to switch over at 9, or two separate stand-alone episodes?

I think these ratings are worrying, especially considering that Numb3rs got its episode number reduced.

  6. Mike says:

Dawn, I don’t think that it is at all that bad yet. Medium did pretty much the same as GW and Numb3rs so I think it’s safe; however if it wants to be a “winner” it’s going to need to muster up some new interesting material soon. Ghost Whisperer was down in season 3 and the numbers shot up in season 4 when the story got interesting so thats what I’m hopeing will happen to Medium. Even tho the Medium promotions have decreased it’s still much better than it was on NBC, thats for sure!

  7. Gina says:

I have to agree with Mike, I love MediuM and have been watching since the beginning. I would hate to see this be the last season but there really have been
no blow me away episodes so far this season and there doesn’t seem to be one coming from the promos.
We had A Dream, Four Dreams,And Then are examples of some of the really great ones and yes there are many more of them, but this season we haven’t had that yet.
I liked Baby Fever but it was more because of all the funny lines and the way Allison was behaving more than a blow me away wow episode.
I hope we have some blow me away episodes coming because I would love another season. Not every episode has to be blow me away but we do need a few.

I have to disagree with Mike. He said the upcoming episode dosent sound all that unique. I dont believe there has been a story yet where Allison suspected Aerial dating a murderer. Sounds and looks like a good story to me. And I must also disagree with Dawn. Throwing in the towel already. Yes, I know it was me who kept preaching about the friday night death trap on cbs at 9 but Medium is holding its own so far this year. Out of 7 weeks they have won 5. 6 if you exclude the World series. I have loved every story and thought they have gotten better. Dawn, the only show looking likeits in danger so far is Numbers( shame cuz its a good show too). CBS nd I dont know if anyone noticed, but the over all numbers for friday was lower than usual. They were all low. Im not gonna say Medium isnt in trouble cuz lets face it, if ratings dont win the hour networks cut them. But I think Medium will get at least a 7th year. To me its the best show on tv and although she sees dead bodies and has case breaking dreams, its the most realistic!!!!

  9. Mike says:

Aaron, I wasn’t saying that the next episode, “Once in a Lifetime” dosent look good. Just by the promo, if I wasn’t a fan, I woundn’t make it my business to watch friday night, and thats what Medium needs. Gina, like you said, the only episode I really thought was one for the books (Besides the premiere) was “Baby Fever”. Even tho NBC treated Medium like crap, the very few promos they showed were very good, and made you want to watch, CBS’s promos are just ok IMO. I think if Medium wants to continue they need to bring in a new character, or new place or something. The car was nice tho, lol! But really it’s been six years and the same sets and the same people, they need to bring in someone new! They put in that coffee shop in season 4, where Allison met with Lee and Cynthia. The ratings went up a ton from season 3 to season 4 when Anjelica Huston joined the cast also…

  10. Dawn says:

I hope you’re right. But the way ratings have suddenly dropped off and the way CBS has suddenly stopped promoting it makes me think this could be the last year. I guess all we can do is keep watching and hope for another season.
I think that this is one of its best seasons yet, creatively, and I think it still has lots of room to grow. I just hope the network feels the same way and gives it a chance.

  11. Shari says:

wow DAWN, and is the sky falling too?

I still have faith and hope and think that if Glen Gordon Caron wanted to, he could turn things around besides Medium obviously has a lot of fans.

  12. Kelly says:

I also noticed there have not been any AMAZING episodes yet this season like we have had in the past with episodes mentioned in the above posts and plenty of others.
I am not going to blame CBS since they gave Medium a second chance and since they did a lot to promote it at the beginning of the season to get viewers to watch. Now it is up to Medium to keep those viewers watching with some amazing episodes.

A lot of the episodes this season have focused on humor. Joe has had some pretty funny lines in most of these episodes. I am wondering if the makers of Medium realize this will probably be the last season and are just having fun with it.
Just a thought that crossed my mind.

I would like to see another season but I would also like to have some WOW Amazing episodes too! :)

  13. Jose says:

Medium is not gonna get cancel yet becuase is like a first year of the show just becuase is got in a new network and i think no matter what CBS is not going to cancel the show becuase GW and medium is the best combination , and another good sign for medium is that the only friday show CBS reduce episode is NUmbers and thats becuase is gonna be axed soon but GW and Medium is still full 24 episodes season confirmed!!! is still hope!!!!!!

  14. Amy says:

Yeah, I see what ya’ll are saying. Last nights episode was good but not one of my favorites. Cute to see Allison enjoying YMCA and then ease-dropping on others.

The plot was simple this week. Figured out it was the bomb guy pretty quick but that’s okay. I am always trying to figure it out that’s what I like about the show, the mystery.

Yeah, So far this season none have really wowed me that much but I still liked them they just weren’t the best that Medium has to offer is all.

I do hope Medium is renewed for next year. We still have plenty of time to recup in the ratings and hopefully we will get wowed by medium soon!

  15. Dawn says:

NO, SHARI. The sky is not falling. I’m just being realistic. Medium is in its sixth season, and at this point, the chances of it experiencing a sudden resurgence in popularity are pretty slim, especially if the network has suddenly lost faith in its ability to perform to its standards.
Them’s the facts. I’m just saying that barring a sudden growth in viewers (particularly the younger ones), the chances of the show being picked up for another season are growing smaller by the day. It’s demo average is too far below the network’s average for it to be considered a shoo-in for renewal just yet. It’s early in the season, so things may change, but at this point, it’s too early to expect a renewal, and I’m just saying, don’t get your hopes up yet.

  16. aaron says:

Im just gonna throw something out there. L&O SVU is barely getting ratings. And thats a seasoned show that is in the middle of the week. Thy are barely getting 8 million viewers. Given its NBC, but hey, lets not get so worried yet. Alot of people is getting worried and talking about the WOW eposodes. That is an easy fix. All we need is a couple new writers to the show and give them more suspense. I love Medium and as long as GW is going, I dont think they will get rid of Medium. They are a good combination and I love both shows being on back to back.

  17. Karen says:

I don’t think we should throw in the towel yet. They don’t decide on which shows are coming back this soon. I think the final decisions are made in the spring. Lets hope Medium can put out some really great episodes before then and bring the ratings up.

If we are all aware the show is in danger, the people at Medium must be also, so hopefully they step it up the rest of this season.

What happened to GGC? He wrote some of the best episodes in past seasons. Maybe he needs to write again.

  18. Dawn says:

I think that since the writer’s strike, there has been a big change among the Medium writing staff. They lost some of their best writers after that, like Rene Echevarria and Javier Grillo Marxuach. And I’ve read that Diane Ademu-John has signed a development to write a pilot for NBC. I hope that that doesn’t mean she’s leaving too. They do still have some great writers on staff, but I do think that GGC has been turning over a good portion of the writing duties to them. I really like the eps that he writes the best. The show is better when it has his “voice”. I’m sure he oversees everything, but still it’s not the same without his touch. I’d like to see him writing more this season, especially if they hope to get back to the kind of ratings they once had. Creatively, it’s still as good as ever, but sometimes it does feel a little stale. I hope that they can come up with some really great episodes this season and kick it up a notch. After all, they’ve been given a fresh start on a new network. That alone should be enough to rejuvenate them.
Karen, they don’t decide this early, but they’ve already reduced the number of episodes ordered for Numbers by 6, so what’s to stop them from doing the same to Medium? That’s all I’m saying. I’m not giving up hope yet, but unless and until things turn around ratings wise, I’m not poppin’ the cork for another season just yet.

  19. Kelly says:

I agree Dawn, That would be great if GGC could write a few episodes this season to kick things up a notch. You don’t want to get up for a soda during any of his episodes.

Hoping for more seasons of Medium! :)

  20. Lisa says:

They should have a contest where screenwriters or fans of the show can submit their ideas/plots/storylines to be used and the winner lands a job working for Medium..ROFL…just kidding…then again..

  21. Dawn says:

Oooh, that’s a great idea, Lisa. I’d love to try that. That would be the coolest job too.
