Bad Psychics Cause Serious Problems

by Katelyn on July 3rd, 2007

I thought this article by Benjamin Radford was really interesting:

In June, a psychic offered information in the case of Lisa Stebic, a 37-year-old mother of two missing since April 30. The psychic claimed that Stebic would be found in Silver Springs State Park. The family endured a “roller coaster” of emotions as police and volunteers searched the park for Stebic’s remains.

It turns out that Lisa wasn’t there and the family once more was back to square one, while volunteers wasted hours searching in the wrong place. Sylvia Browne and several others have popped up pretty regularly recently with false information. Seriously, I think fake mediums need to tell fortunes at local fairs and carnivals instead of promoting themselves as true psychics and messing up or delaying missing persons investigations. How do you feel about people who have been wrong over and over again still involving themselves in these serious cases? Should the media even give bad psychics press?

Oh, I can’t wait to hear what JCW has to say! Come out, come out, wherever you are JCW!

Seriously, I do think there are these fakes who ruin the credibility of the real thing, because it seems the fakes are the one who toot their own horn constantly and get the press while the real deal usually just keep quiet and help when asked to do so.

On the Court TV Channel, they have a show called “Psychic Detective” and have real stories of police departments that have called in psychics to help solve crimes. Just like we see with the character of Allison Dubois on Medium, the information they get is open to interpreptation, for example, one psychic explained she may get an image of “15″, but she doesn’t know if that means 1.5 or 15 or is it time or miles, or what exactly. It was quite interesting. Of course, there are sceptics among the police departments, but they usually come around after these psychics come up with info that does prove to be correct and that no one else could have known. These psychics are not people that are on TV or the talk show circuit.

IMHO, the ones who seek to become rich through publicity are usually the fakes.

Sylvia Brown ticks me off completely. I’ve seen Montel. Apparently, says my friend who doesn’t… No, hasn’t spoken a lie to me yet, and said her mothers friend went on Montel and asked for her future to be read. Sylvia said all this crap, that apparently came true. I don’t believe one word of it.

If you have a gift of being psychic, you don’t expect it. You’re not on a long life path to find your psychic abilities, because you may not have them. You would probably experience it unexpectedly, instead of seeking it out. That would be a true psychic, too me. It’s like, and I know this is a crappy comparison, Harry Potter. He never knew he was a wizard. He always experienced weird things throughout his life, until he found out that everything that he was experiencing was because of the fact he was a wizard.
