Chaos on the ‘Medium’ Set
More from Ask Ausiello:
Question: How certain are you about Medium’s backstage strife (Ask Ausiello 1/3)?— Holly
Ausiello: On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being not-so-certain and 10 being absolutely certain, I’d give it a 9.7. After my item ran last week, a second source close to the show e-mailed me to thank me for “talking about the chaos over at Medium,” adding that it’s “insane over there.” I should also note that several Medium fans have e-mailed me to say that the alleged behind-the-scenes woes are having little or no impact on the show creatively, as this season has been better than ever. Go figure.
I will keep you posted as I hear more. If I hear more. In the meantime, why worry? The show is great, the actors are excellent, and the story lines are muy engaging. And besides, all TV shows eventually go away. Enjoy them while they are here. Live in the moment.
And record every episode you can get your hands on!

Yep, it was me. I wanted answers and e-mailing the guy who had the information in the first place seemed like the best place to start. In case you were wondering, that was not my my actual question. I can’t remember exactly how I worded it, but is was more involved. At least in this one he does not make it sound like Medium will be biting the dust anytime soon.

Well, today The Angry Anthropologist had an entry about a television show in which he is featured background, and the entire post was about improvisation on-set. Seems it’s not all that unusual.
Granted, if they’re having script issues right up until filming, it complicates things, but still, so long as the ratings are there the network, producers and cast will continue to produce product.

The only thing I noticed the day I visited the set was that the crew seemed bored. They were blocking the kitchen scene in ‘Mother’s Little Helper’ where Joe is playing a board game with Allison, who later tells him all the suspects have been cleared. But I would probably be bored too if I had to sit around all day watching actors play a scene over and over again just to figure out who is going to stand where.
I was sitting on the couch in the living room side of the set and asked a guy in the chair behind me if I was in his way. He said, “No, I’m just waiting,” in a tired voice before laying his head back onto the chair and staring at the ceiling. Or where the ceiling would be if it were really a house.
I wasn’t sure whether to be offended or find it funny. I chose the latter.

I’m sure no offense was intended.
From my time on set, I can tell you that I learned that waiting is 75% of the game if you
are an extra or crew member. Even the “Stars” spend most of their day waiting.
Glamorous, huh?
Survival on a film or television production means bringing a good book, some knitting or a crossword puzzle with you. A box of Cheese-its
wouldn’t hurt either.
As to the behind the scenes mayhem at Medium, I suspect it’s not all that unusual, and so long as audiences tune in, it shouldn’t hurt the show’s prospects for future seasons.
So Medium fans: Make like Tom Cruise with the Beckham’s and get yourself some converts!

If they compared this to another set, I think it’d compare pretty well.
It sounds as if this Asueioulllsio guy is a bit fussy.

I’m with you. He probably doesn’t even watch the show. But after reading that, I got upset, thinking that my favorite show might actually be in trouble. I love this show and hate to think that the people who work on it are not happy with their jobs. Then I did some checking and found out that Medium is actually doing good, not great, but not bad. It’s consistently at the thirty range in the rankings with an average of about 9 million viewers, which I thought was pretty bad until I looked at some of the other shows. The only ones that are getting great ratings are the American Idols and Desperate Housewives(don’t ask me!) and there a LOT of shows that are doing worse than Medium. So now I don’t feel so bad about what that Ausiello guy said. The only thing that worries me is that NBC hasn’t renewed it yet. I wish they would go ahead and do it. I also read in another blog that Jake Weber wasn’t happy and might not return next year. Anybody heard anything about that?
