David Cubitt Shows His Teachers They Were Wrong

by Katelyn on December 22nd, 2007

Betty found this wonderful story about David Cubitt in MacLean’s Magazine - 100 Canadians to Watch article:

He will always remember what his teachers said more than a decade ago - just before they kicked him out of acting school.  “They told me that I couldn’t act,” recalls Cubitt, “and wouldn’t ever act.” But what did they know? Recovering splendidly from those early bad reviews, the Vancouver-raised Cubitt has gone on to become one of the bright young lights of Canadian television. No overnight success story here: Cubitt has been doing mostly minor roles in Canadian film and TV for the past decade. But with his portrayal of brash, take-no-prisoners investment banker Jack Larkin on the critically acclaimed Traders - earning him last years Gemini for best performance by an actor in a dramatic TV series - Cubitt, 32, has come into his own.

Good thing he didn’t listen to his teachers, huh? I think this story should inspire us all to follow our dreams, whether people around us offer support or not. I can’t imagine Medium without David Cubitt as Lee Scanlon and I know most, if not all, of you feel the same way!

Another thing this story made me wonder was how many potentially great actors went to that school and are now bankers or bus drivers or accountants instead? Teachers should teach, not crush someone’s spirit!

Thanks Katelyn and Betty. I think I’ve read this article before and I love it. I teach (not acting, though) and try to always be constructive with my comments. There’s no point in being negative or derogatory; I’ve found that in many cases instructors do this to make him or herself feel superior.
