Join Glenn Gordon Caron As He Live Blogs After the Premiere
Don’t forget Glenn Gordon Caron will be liveblogging after the East Coast premiere of Medium. For West Coasters, that should be a little after 8:00pm our time, right? That part is kind of a bummer. If we read the blog too early, we may encounter spoilers we don’t want to know. If we wait until after the show, the blog will be closed.
Wait a minute, what am I saying? You can’t close a blog. Oh wait, according to NBC, you can! I was curious to know just what they meant by “live blog” so I did a little searching on the NBC site and found the following recent “Live Blog” events:
Liveblogging? In the words of Inigo Montoya, “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”
This looks like Q&A to me. In fact, Jay’s is called “Q&A.” NBC opens the blog an hour or two before liveblogging is scheduled to begin so readers can leave questions in the comments. Then, after a brief introductory post, the blogger simply posts answers to those early questions one after the other. Meanwhile, people comment on each blog post but the blogger does not engage with those comments. I doubt the blogger even reads them.
Then, an hour and a half later, they close the blog by putting up a final post thanking people for coming. Comments are still open, but nobody is home and they don’t appear to be coming back and even if they do they don’t engage with the comments anyway so why bother?
Call me a blog snob but I don’t call that liveblogging. It is more like a combination of chat room and forum/message board. To live blog is to write about an event as it happens all around you. Describe what is happening. Include what you are feeling. Include other people’s reactions. Provide commentary, like they do on DVD extras where the director talks about what was going on behind the scenes when they shot a particular scene or why they decided to do it that way.
If Glenn Gordon Caron were to liveblog the show as it premieres, now THAT would be a live blog to show up for! Check out Defamer’s liveblogging of the Oscars to see what I am talking about. (And NBC, if you’re listening, I know you have that show on tape. He can prepare his “live” blog ahead of time and you can have some staffer post it in drips when the show actually airs.)
You know I will show up no matter what they call it, live blog or forum. How could I not? Please join me. In fact, the blog is open for business now so get on over there and post your comments. Let’s ask some kick-ass questions and make it a happenin’ party place to be tonight!

THIS is why TV should be available on the internet. Waiting until 9 pm PST is totally unfair!
