Medium Episode 4.05 “Do You Hear What I Hear” Spoiler
I know everyone has been longing to know which episode David Arquette helped direct. Well, this is it. “Do You Hear What I Hear” sounds like a fantastic episode - Allison goes deaf because she is so deeply connected to a missing deaf girl. Joe gets to play boy detective with Cynthia as they try to find a missing girl. Devalos and Scanlon both make appearances, which always makes us happy.

Katelyn, I posted my thoughts on this earlier, so if you find that comment in the spam filter, you can discard it.
I am really psyched about seeing this ep, for two reasons. One is because it sounds like a really intense, emotional episode and I can’t wait to see what Patricia does with that kind of material. And two, I am anxious to see how David does directing a “serious” episode as opposed to last season’s 1-900-Lucky, which was considerably lighter than the usual Medium. Patricia commented on the View that this ep was the most emotional one of the nine that they shot, and it was great for her to have her brother directing her, and how safe she feels going to her “darkest places” with him there. (She said that when he directed last year.) So it should be interesting to see just what kind of performance she is able to pull off with this kind of material with him directing her.
Also, did anyone else read the comment about what Ben Silverman’s plans are for Medium and Monday nights? Seems he plans to expand Deal or No Deal and American Gladiators to 90 minutes each, and move Medium AGAIN!! That guy is really starting to hack me off! I wish he would just put the show on Mondays where it belongs and leave it alone. It would be one thing if he just held back a few episodes, and kept it on Mondays, but this guy’s a reality tv idiot, and he actually thinks that people are going to watch a full night of reality tv programming. I had a feeling he was gonna be trouble when I heard he was taking over the network. I just hope he doesn’t screw around with Medium until it loses all its viewers and then he has an excuse to cancel it. Of course, that may be his intention. Darnit! I’m really starting to not like that guy.

This sounds like a good episode and I think David proved to be a good director with the episode from last season.
Dawn, I know you think this NBC guy is an idiot, but someone at NBC was responsible for putting Medium back on Monday where it belongs and where the fans and TV columnists have been clammoring for it to be. So far the ratings have been very strong - especially compared to the rest of the NBC line-up.
As far as reality TV goes, all the networks are in the same boat - they are letting things that would normally have been cancelled by now play out because at least they are never before seen episodes which are getting more and more rare as this strike goes on. The networks are losing ad revenue because they can’t charge the big bucks they would for shows that can’t continue because they are out of scripts. Reality shows are cheap to produce and there are idiots at home that appear to be so desperate for new programming they will watch those installments of American Gladiators, Wife Swap, etc and give them ratings they wouldn’t normally get if up against good competition.
Not all reality shows are bad - look at all the good Extreme Makeover Home Edition does for families all across the country! Right here in my small town, they helped a family whose twin daughters both had leukemia - they lived in a mobile home before they got the help from them and one of the girls who had come out of remission couldn’t come home because the air quality was too poor. They gave them a Ford Explorer Hybrid which was very important because we are about 50 miles from the Medical Center where the girls receive their treatment. I just love Dancing With The Stars - and So You Think You Can Dance - it provides great entertainment and the stars they have on DWTS always surprise me! DWTS has singlehandely caused a resurgance in ballroom dancing - people are inspired from those shows and they showcase people with a lot of talent. I have no desire to watch a reality show that makes people eat bugs and crap like that.
I can hardly wait until tonight’s brand new Medium! I’m so glad Lifetime put the repeats back at 10 PM CST instead of Midnight like last week - what was up with that?
I was sad that Medium didn’t start in the fall, but since the writers are on strike, I think it has helped to boost Medium in the ratings since it has fresh episodes. Hopefully new viewers are finding Medium and the ratings will continue to grow so Medium will win renewal for a 5th season.

Betty, I agree that the decision to hold Medium until mid-season may have proved to be a good one, but my concern is what they intend to do with it in the future. There are no new eps scheduled for the next two weeks, so what is NBC going to do with it after that? And why is it that Medium is the only show that gets jerked around like this? That’s the problem I have with this decision. And I still say Silverman is an idiot.
I agree that some reality shows are entertaining and do some good. I happen to enjoy shows like EM:HE. But I don’t like the mindless drivel that they seem intent on filling the schedules with, like Keeping Up with the Kardashians, and Hogan Knows Best, and My Fair Brady, and even The Bachelor shows. They’re all just a shameless attempt by a bunch of dysfunctional people to get their fifteen minutes of fame, who are too lazy to get a real job, and too screwed up to get a real life. What these people need instead of a television show, is some serious psychiatric counseling, and a good swift kick in the pants.
And I don’t even mind shows like Deal or No Deal or American Gladiators, in small doses, and not at the expense of quality, well-crafted shows like Medium. I just think the networks should balance out their schedules more evenly with both genres. And NBC may have made the decision to put Medium back on Mondays, but whether they are smart enough to leave it there is another question entirely. That’s all I’m saying.

I’m sorry to hear that NBC is thinking about moving Medium yet again. How hard is it to put a show somewhere and leave it? No new episodes for the next two weeks is bad, too.
Well, I guess what will happen will happen. I’ll be able to find it wherever they put it, but I know some people won’t. They’re just asking for lower ratings. This really too bad.
As far as reality shows go I really try to avoid them. Game shows like Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader? are okay, but this is as close to reality television as I get. When I sit down and watch television I want to slip into someone else’s life for an hour, and this just does not work with reality shows.
Still, I can’t wait for Medium tonight!!
