Medium Episode 4.05 “Girls Ain’t Nothing But Trouble” Open Mic

by Katelyn on February 25th, 2008

devalos is back!Today, we finally get to watch what may have been originally the second episode of this season, if we go by NBC’s photos. The promo photos for Girls Ain’t Nothing But Trouble say 62-02. This is the one where Devalos finally makes an appearance. I missed him and I’m sure Allison did, too!

To celebrate his return, my brother whipped up his heart attack cheesy nachos. They’re sooo good, but it is hard to find a nacho under the four different kinds of cheese melted across the top! Of course, Devalos wouldn’t be able to eat them and some of you are watching what you eat, so we also have a big tray of fresh veggies and dip.

Since he’s showing a lot of grit by coming back and being true to himself, let’s have Grit Cocktails:

1 1/2 oz Irish Whiskey

1 1/2 oz Vermouth

(I’m a bubbly wine girl myself, so I’ll be breaking open a bottle of Champagne, too.)

This looks like another interesting episode, Katelyn. I love the ones that place Allison in a moral dilemma and show her struggling to balance doing what she thinks she has to do with doing the right thing. And part of this one was filmed as a silent movie, which looks really cool. That sounds like fun.
And YAAAY, Devalos is back!! I can’t wait to see him outdo that sleazebag who’s the DA now. That’s the only good thing about seeing Allison working for Larry Watt: she’ll be going up against the creep who fired her. Too bad it looks like he’s going to win, darnit, and she’ll have to help him do it too. That sucks.
On another note, I’ve noticed that a lot of TV sites on the internet (with the exception of TVGuide, of course) have been putting Medium on their lists of Must-See shows almost every week. At least, if NBC isn’t going to promote the show, then maybe it’ll get a boost from all these other sites mentioning it. And despite the show being down in the ratings last week from it’s last airing in January, it has still been climbing the list of most-recorded shows on Tivo and is at #4 this week, up from #6 last week, and well above it’s season average last year of #12 on the list. That has got to look good to NBC. And since they just ordered six more episodes of that dud, Lipstick Jungle, that had better mean they’re renewing Medium for another season. Or two would be even better.

A good beginning. I loved the way it was all dark and deserted seeming at first in Watt’s office.

Allison is more upset that the guy is innocent than that he is guilty. What does she do?

Isn’t her business casual attire smokin? I love her clothes this season.

    Hi,
I love Madium and Patricia Arquette. I love Patricia’s wordrobe this season, but I was wondering if someone in wardrobe could find a bra that fits her. I feel that the current selection is distracting and takes away from her wonderful acting.

    Hellloo!
Dawn, I left you a message a imdb. I haven’t started my DVR yet, but I do look forward to this one. I really like Devalos.
Did you say that Medium ranks high in DVR numbers?

I am SOOO TICKED OFF!!! My DVR didn’t record this so I’ll have to wait til tomorrow to watch it! DANGIT!!!

Thank goodness NBC has the eps online now, or I would REALLY be hacked off. I’ll comment tomorrow after I watch it.
Yes, Medium is ranked #4 on Tivo’s most recorded shows list. Which is great for the ratings, if those are taken into account, which they supposedly are.

    Hi to all..
I love the part when Patricia and the girls were into Black and White Silent acts.. Its fun to see this I wanted to see this again.
Did you all know that Patrica is artist. she drew the Fairy on the yellow lined pad? She is good! I love the fairies the Irish Folklore..
Well. you all have good week.

I totally agree with Kristine Hayes–Patty needs a new bra!!! I was totally distracted and hoping my husband wasn’t!
I liked this episode, but like last week, couldn’t help asking, “What was the point?” Why did Watt even want Allison around if he didn’t want her to tell him anything? She didn’t do anything!! I just want her to make a difference like she did in the good old days.
However, unlike some of the previous episodes this season, her visions and how they built upon eachother is more what we were used to in previous seasons. That was refreshing. Now don’t get me wrong, I still adore this show, but something just seems so different. The way Allison ticks is not the same way that she used to. I’m having issues adjusting.
I wasn’t too happy about the ending here. I don’t think that was right for that daughter to manipulate her father that way and Allison just letting it go with a threat that she’d be watching. Come on!! Make it right, Al! Oh well, I’ll get over it.
I really enjoyed the family scenes, though. Geesh, Marie is sure growing up! And I loved how Allison handled Ariel’s predicament. I hope I’m that smart and rational when my children are teenagers!

Okay, I STILL haven’t seen this episode (STUPID DVR!! GRRR!) but I want to say one thing. I’ve already mentioned this before so I won’t get on my soapbox again, but it bugs me when people are constantly criticizing the show. Last year, they said it was boring, so the producers shook things up, and now people are complaining because it’s different. Make up your mind.
It is in the nature of everything, even television shows, to go through change. It’s called evolution. Would the show still be as believable if Allison were still at the same point she was three years ago with her abilities? Would it still be the same if the girls never got older, and just stayed the same age? It’s the same way in life, which is why I love this show because it reflects so much of things that happen in real life, to real people, and it’s constantly changing. It’s not the same as it was in the beginning, or even last season, but it’s still a great show. That’s just my opinion.
But unfortunately, I know everyone doesn’t agree with me, and that’s being reflected in the show’s ratings. It was down this week to 7.6 million viewers, from 8.5 last week. This is not good. But it’s because of NBC’s poor promotion again. Even when they give it a decent time slot, they don’t promote it, and it can only sell itself so much. They have to do a little bit to support it. I heard a radio commercial yesterday for “Deal or No Deal” and that new show, “My Dad is Better than Your Dad”, and it went on and on about these two shows, and then at the very end, almost as an afterthought, they added, “Followed by an all-new Medium”. That’s it! That’s all they said about Medium. That sucks. They’re doing the same thing they did last year. Just throwing it out there to sink or swim on its own. No promotion, crappy lead-ins. Stupid NBC!

    Hi Everyone,

Didn’t get to watch the episode yet, but have verified it recorded. Thanks Kristine and Dorothy for the tip about her bra, looking forward to seeing it.

ratings were at 7.6 million last night, not good folks.
The 3 week hold has really hurt this show, as well as having the new game show in front.
Hopefully it can go up next week or I am worried about a cancellation…

This was the lowest rated show of this odd season so far. Perhaps it is because of the crappy lead-in that NBC has given it - “My Dad is Better than Yours” UGG another reality show we could have done without.

I don’t think NBC has been promoting it as heavily and it was and this week it was up against the highly promoted “A Raisin in the Sun” with P Diddy on ABC.

The good news is, even with a crappy lead in last week, Medium actually IMPROVED on it’s lead-in ratings.

I have to say, I wasn’t thrilled with this episode. We saw Devalos for what, 30 seconds?

I’m not thrilled with the eps where Allison and Joe argue a lot.

It is rather disconcerting to be in a world where no one really cares that the guilty person is still running around - a rather calculating biyatch, too, I might add.

We did not get to see Scanlon in this one - too bad.

I am with Dorothy on this one - what was the point?

All I can think is that with the strike looming this season, perhaps there wasn’t that much attention to detail in the plots due to the rush to get scripts completed and through the production process before the work stoppage.

MWA, although the ratings are down this week, it still rates higher than a lot of NBC shows that are being touted as great, i.e. 30 Rock, The Office, and My Name is Earl, and I think even Lipstick Jungle had very mediocre ratings and they were given a plumb spot on the schedule.

Anyway you look at it, this season is really bizarre because of the strike. With no pilot season this year, NBC is better off sticking with Medium, a known commodity, with better ratings than a lot of NBC shows, and a stellar cast. It doesn’t hurt that Anjelica Huston’s guest starring role has created a lot of publicity as has the weird season. Anjelica Huston singing the praises of Patricia Arquette doesn’t hurt anything either!

Wow, Katelyn, Whiskey and Vermouth? Sounds like something that would peel paint!

Dorothy, I didn’t notice the bra thing, but I have often hoped that Stacy and Clinton from TLC’s What Not to Wear would come and give the wardrobe department some tips on dressing Patricia’s petite, yet curvy, frame. I do think Patricia has been looking very pretty this season.

Perhaps I would like these shows better if I was watching them when well-rested and not at midnight after working two jobs. Somehow, I don’t think that is going to happen. My hope springs eternal with each new episode that it will be spectacular. Don’t get me wrong, Medium is still my number one show, I’ve just been a little disappointed in these last couple of shows.

Oh, I forgot to mention I absolutely LOVED the beginning of the show with the silent movie dream. THAT was fantastic!

I FINALLY got to watch this ep, and I thought it was excellent. I LOVED the opening dream sequence and Allison’s reaction when she woke up was pretty funny. I could see the parallel right away with the DA being the evil banker and Watt as their benevolent benefactor. It was interesting to see the moral quandary that Allison found herself in and how she handled it. It’s always neat when they put her in those situations, like last season’s “Profiler” episode when she knew that the FBI agent was the killer but she couldn’t tell anyone. I also liked the way she handled the Ariel situation. It was beautiful the way she explained that she wanted people to like her for herself and not for what they thought she could do for them. And there’s nothing wrong with Joe and Al arguing once in a while. Couples do that. Especially when they’re in a difficult situation like the Dubois’ are in now. But I think the writers only do that to show just how strong their relationship is and how committed they are to one another and to their family. That’s what makes this show work so well. That and the excellent work by the cast.
I’ve heard a lot of complaining about this season, and people blaming it on the strike or on the fact that Allison was outed and the family is struggling financially. I personally don’t see anything wrong with this season. Every season so far has been different and each has had its own strengths and weaknesses. I just think people are being TOO NITPICKY and I’m tired of hearing people criticize it.
I also didn’t notice anything wrong with Patricia’s bra or her wardrobe, for that matter. I think she looks great, and she dresses like a normal working mother. Leave it alone already.

As far as the ratings go, Deal will be back in the 9 o’clock slot next Monday, and it has proven to be a better match for Medium, so hopefully it will give Medium the boost it needs to get back up to its previous ratings performance. We shall see.

    Sorry Dawn,
I hauled you out. I think part of the problem is there were several weeks of hype while we waited for it to restart and we had really high expectations? I kind of liked this episode myself, but I wandered away during the commercials near the end, misjudged my time and missed the last few minutes.Thank goodness I can catch it online.

What hype, Katelyn? NBC started off the year doing a decent job of promoting the show, but since then, they’ve done nothing. I’ve actually taped a couple of nights of primetime on NBC just to see what kind of promotion it gets, and it’s nothing. In one three-hour block of programming on a Thursday night, I saw ONE very brief commercial for Medium during Lipstick Jungle, while an hour of Deal (which is the obvious best matchup for Medium) had NO commercials at all for Medium. And this week I heard a radio spot for NBC touting their all-new Monday night lineup and raving about the sensational Deal or No Deal and My Dad is Better than your Dad, followed by (I kid you not), “followed by an all-new Medium.” That was it. That was the extent of the promotion that NBC gave Medium on that sixty-second spot. It’s sickening the way NBC treats this show.
