Medium Episode 4.07 “Burn Baby Burn” Open Mic
Hooray for another of the start of another of the two part episodes! I love how the characters have more time to develop and the ending is less forced on these multi-part shows. Today, we are going to see “Burn Baby Burn” which is the episode where Joe’s mom wants Allison to keep a secret about her health from Joe.
We’ve had a bit of a cold snap here and this episode has a title that makes me think of hot stuff, so I made a pot of chicken chili and a big pan of cheddar cheese cornbread (Yes, it does have the whole corn kernels in it to make it nice and moist.) as a side dish. If it is hot where you are and you can’t handle the thought of a steaming bowl of chili, I also made vanilla custard and I’ll serve it to you chilled.
If you have to work tomorrow, you’d better stick with water, because I’m serving wines from several of Mexico’s hottest wineries and I’ve heard they are so good it is hard to stick to one glass: L.A. Cetto, Valmar and Pedro Domecq.

Ooh, sounds good, Katelyn. I love chili with sour cream and shredded cheese on top. Those wines sound good too. For a dessert, how about a nice New York cheesecake with a raspberry topping? Yummmm!
I’m really looking forward to this ep too. I love Kathy Bakerm and I’m glad they gave her a two-parter this time. She’s such a great actress and her character is great too. It’s been too long since we’ve seen her. It should be interesting to see how she reacts to the news about Allison’s abilities, and how Allison handles her news.
The sad thing, in a way, is that there are only three episodes with Anjelica Huston left. I can’t say I dislike her character, but I’m not too fond of her either. GGC has promised an exciting conclusion to her storyline so I hope that’s true and we see lots mor interesting stuff out of her character before she goes.
I’m also glad to see them doing more multi-part episodes (though I don’t want it to become serialized or anything, the single episode format works just fine, thank you very much). But it does make for more compelling stories. I can’t wait to see this one and see how it works out. And yippee, we finally get to see Allison team up with Scanlon and Devalos again! The Three Amigos ride again!! Lol!

Did anyone catch Deal or No Deal? From the last few minutes, it looks like there was a nutty lady with a lucky wig on.

Yipes, that is not the way I’d want to wake up as an adult, let alone someone as young as Ariel.

I guess Ariel doesn’t have to break the news to Owen that his mom’s dead. The principal is doing it for her. But she looks so sad and torn.

Hey Katelyn, Hey Dawn!
Sorry I’m late- I’ll take a glass of vino.
This ep has been very interesting so far. I love seeing the whole gang in this one. Scanlon looks good.

They don’t do well on opposite sides. That was the silliest thing I ever saw. And Allison just stood there and waited them out so she could tell them she couldn’t help either of them.

By the way, does anyone wonder if the suspect and his dead wife had a child? A child that may have a mother who set herself on fire?

Wow!! That was fantastic! Although I’m not sure I’m crazy about how they’re taking so much of the focus off of Allison. She’s hardly been in this episode. Lots of Scanlon and Deputy Doll, though, yuck!
I LOVED the scene with Scanlon and Devalos arguing and poor Allison caught in the middle. That was hilarious! Poor Allison didn’t know which way to turn.(and didn’t you just love Patricia’s facial expressions in that scene, she can do so much more without saying a thing than most actors can with pages of dialogue).
Loved the pillow talk between Allison and Joe, as always. They are so cute together. And poor Ariel having those awful dreams. She looked so sad when the principal was telling the boy about his mother.
Poor Allison. Her dead father-in-law won’t leave her alone, and her mother-in-law is telling her a horrible secret that she can’t tell Joe. And when she asked Allison if she could tell her anything about her future, I felt so bad for Allison, because you could tell she wanted to desperately be able to tell her anything that would give her comfort. But it doesn’t work that way. I wonder if she will see anything before Marjorie leaves. I hope she does, or they at least revisit the story and let us know how it ends.
Okay, who’s got this one figured out yet? I do. Who wants to bet that Ariel and Allison’s dreams are about to collide?

That was an excellent episode written by the wonderful Javier Grillo-Marxuach, who if you hadn’t heard, has had his comic book series, The Middleman, picked up as a television series by ABC. Which means that he will be serving as exec-producer of his own show. I wonder if that means that he’ll be leaving Medium. That would be as shame, because he is very talented and has written some of my favorite episodes. It’s good that he had his book picked up by ABC, but it will be a loss for Medium.
Anyway, can’t wait to see how this one ends.

Hola guys and gals!
Did anyone notice the blatant use of wigs on Patricia and Sofia with any scenes regarding Sofia having dreams about the woman setting herself on file? I certainly did. It was distracting. I would say they added all of those scenes after the strike, as Patricia’s hair is now longer and has Sofia cut her hair?
Anyway, it was an OK show for me, I felt there were too many story lines going on, and Patricia had little emotional work to do here, except briefly at the end with Kathy Baker.
Hopefully next episode will give her more to do, and give the audience more to do.
I still love the show though, and the family!

I so love seeing Joe’s Dad! Yippee! We’ve been wondering if he was going to make an appearance this season and there he is! In the same ep with his ex! I’m so glad he is totally regretting the way he spent his life and left that wonderful woman!
Wow! That’s putting Allison in a terrible spot - her mother-in-law telling her she is possibly dying, but don’t tell her son! That’s not fair! Don’t you think he would want to be with her, talke to her? I hate it when people think that way.
I did notice that Allison’s hair looked shorter in the scenes for next week.
Yippee Allison, Canlon and Devalos together again!
Poor Scanlon! That scene in the bed with Scanlon and Deputy doll should have had so much more spark to it - when oh when will we get rid of Deputy Doll? Too funny when Scanlon was avoiding the phone calls and Deputy Doll asks, “What’s her name?” Ha Ha!
Didn’t you feel so sorry for Scanlon the way those guys treated him in the squad room? He’s having such a bad year - first school duty and now this.
Poor Ariel - such bad dreams.
How great that our heroes find themselves on opposite sides of the law this time - great scene between them! Both of them coming to Allison to see what she knows.
How unlikeable is that Cynthia Keener person? On the one hand, I feel like she’s trying to throw Allison and bone and on the other hand, she’s such a biyatch!
I certainly hope the second half of this episode doesn’t let us down - I love the first half!
I just love any episode Joe’s Dad is in!

OK, Dawn, I’ll take you on with my prediction. Yes, Allison’s dream is about to collide with Ariel’s. I think that somehow the dental work made the prostitute look like the mother-that’s why they had to burn her, so that the dental work would be the only way to identify the body. The mother is safe and sound in Morocco or wherever it was that Ariel found the postcard from. Why all of this happened the way it did…I don’t know. But that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
Deputy Doll has to go!! But, I love that we saw all of our old friends together again. It was hard watching Devalos and Scanlon argue though. I bet it’s painful for them, too. They need to be on the same side. I’m glad that Scanlon isn’t dedicated to the new DA.
Yeah, that Cynthia is definately not my favorite person. She was so rude to Allison. Does she want her help, or doesn’t she?! Can’t wait for next week.

Dorothy, I’m thinking the same thing, but I think that the Mom is having a fling with the dentist and he set it up with the girl and the fake dental work so they could fake mom’s death and run away to Spain. At least that’s what everyone thinks. It’s going to be interesting if they throw us a curve and we’re all wrong, lol!
Betty, I’m with you about seeing Joe’s parents, and we get BOTH of them in one episode, but poor Allison, her mother-in-law telling her a terrible secret like that and making her keep it from Joe. I LOVED the scene with Scanlon and Devalos fighting and Allison caught in the middle. TOO funny! Her expressions were priceless! This ep was great, and after MWA’s comments and watching the ep again, I think they may have added more to this one to make it a two-parter. That’s cool, though, cuz it’s a good one. I’m lovin’ it. :D

OK, after years of watching CSI and other shows that involve CSI type info, it wouldn’t make sense to have the hooker sub for the boy’s Mom. Why? Because, although the dental work might be faked to match, a coroner can tell from the bones the approximate age of the person and whether or not they have given birth. The boy’s Mom looked to be late 30’s (being generous here) or early 40’s, while the hooker was supposed to be a teenager or young adult. Obviously the hooker and the dentist figure in somewhere…..
Funny, that Scanlon told DiNovi he “had a feeling - something was in the air - it was all going to turn to crap”.

I wondered about that too, Betty. (I mean Scanlon’s comment to Dinovi) Maybe there’s to this one than meets the eye. Also didn’t you just love when he confessed to her that it felt good being the only one with guts enough to do his job when no one else would. I love that line. Shows what a great guy he is.

I wonder if they are going to involve Joe’s sisters somewhere in his mother’s illness storyline? After all, he’s not an only child. Has she told her daughters? You’d think if she didn’t think she would survive the surgery, she would be telling them what she wanted to happen aftewards - where to find her life insurance, what she wanted to wear, what funeral home to use, where she wanted to be buried, where to find her will, etc.
My Mom did, and she even told us to vacuum under the green chair they had to move when the ambulance came to get her! My sister and I KNEW we HAD TO VACUUM under that ugly chair because if she did die, she would come back to haunt us if we didn’t! Yes, she did pass away and we knew where everything was because she told us.

Betty, that would be interesting to bring in one of Joe’s sisters. It sounds as if Joe’s mom is the type who doesn’t want people to know the worst. Maybe Joe’s sister can date Scanlon? lol And that bit with DiNovi when she asked Scanlon who was calling–hilarious! If only it were true … ;) Why is she still around??? (Oh, right …)
And can you imagine having all of your teeth pulled out? Yikes!
I liked that Scanlon and Manny are back with Allison. That scene with them fighting over her was great, also the one in the coffee shop.
I also liked seeing Joe’s dead papa and thought it was interesting that he thought it was a bad idea to talk to Joe’s mom. I like the actor who plays him (Kathy Bates, too.)
I’m getting married on Saturday, so I’m blaming that for sounding scattered!

Lol, nansee! I forgot about the scene in the coffee shop when she told them about Ariel’s dream and their combined “Suicide!” was hilarious. My favorite was the two of them fighting over her, like two dogs fighting over a bone, and poor Allison was the bone! Hahaha!
I had forgotten about Joe’s sisters. It would be kind of interesting to see them make an appearance, since we’ve never seen them before. I got the impression when Joe’s mom was telling Allison about her illness, that the sole purpose of her visit was to ask Allison if she could tell her anything about her future, and what the outcome of the treatment would be, not to confide in someone. I got the feeling if she hadn’t found out about Allison’s abilities, that she wouldn’t have told anyone about her illness. Anybody else get that?
By the way, nansee, congratulations on your wedding. Lots of luck with that!

Why doesn’t NBC post the list of music used as background for this show? It does for others. This week they played something choral that sounded like Orff, but I don’t think it was. A “Dies Irae,” perhaps? I probably know more about this topic than anyone, but I can’t identify the piece and would love help!

Boy, I thought I knew everything (well almost everything about Medium especially Jake Weber’s character). I thought he had only one sister, not two. Have their names ever been mentioned?
Betty
Mar 13, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Congratulations nansee! You should have told us earlier!
I don’t recall if they have mentioned Joe’s sisters by name, but I do remember in one episode he mentioned Marie was spending the night with his sister in Flagstaff (I believe this was in “A Couple of Choices”) I think and then in “We Had a Dream” he mentioned staying with his sister in Scottsdale if I remember correctly. I know in one episode, maybe the one where Allison kept hearing the Gloria Gaynor song, “I Will Survive” they were supposed to go to his sister’s wedding - but it was like her 3rd or 4th marriage, so Allison wasn’t thrilled about going in the first place and then she kept having dreams about a plane crashing - I believe that sister was in Utah somewhere because they were going to flyand changed their minds to drive (quite a few hours in the car) and they stopped for the night at a motel because Marie got a very bad ear infection and fever or something to that effect and as luck would have it, when Allison drove to go to the pharmacy and left Joe at the motel with the kids, her car stalled and she happened across this barn where the girl was stashed in an underground trap door - the guy who stashed her there had committed suicide, so they had no way of finding her other than dumb luck and Allison, of course - I’d have to watch the eps again to get all of the cities straight, but I believe it has been at least 3 times a sister was mentioned for Joe - don’t know if it is one sister who marries and moves with the same frequency, or more than one sister.

Jackie, NBC always seems to be a step behind when it comes to the technology of today and keeping us informed - especially if it doesn’t have anything to do with their “pet” shows like Heroes, The Office, and My Name is Earl.
nansee - that totally bites that we are still stuck with DiNovi - I would have loved to have seen a big huge fight over “another woman”! That’s not too far-fetched with Scanlon’s history of having a woman on every corner!
You know nansee, it’s not too late to back out - Ha Ha!

Betty, I believe in the ep “The Song Remains the Same” (which is the one when they were going to his sister’s wedding), there are two names mentioned, Amanda and Tracy, but they don’t say how many sisters he has. And that one was in Salt Lake City. I also recall in the ep “We Had a Dream”, he took the girls to his sister’s in Flagstaff. There was another ep (I believe it was “Method to his Madness”, when Allison was possessed by the serial killer) that he sent them to his sister’s in Prescott. And in season one (A Couple of Choices), his sister lived in Prescott. So either he has a couple of sisters who move around a lot, or he has several sisters. Interesting, inn’t?
I am also interested in finding out the name of the song that was playing when Ariel was dreaming. Someone mentioned “Carmina Burana” or “O Fortuna” or “Dies Irae”, but I don’t think it’s any of those. It sounds very familiar, but I can’t place it.
