Medium Recap: Very Merry Maggie (MED-047)

by Sheila on February 1st, 2007

Brett at TVSquad has a review up of last night’s episode, Very Merry Maggie (MED-047). Check it out.

As for me, I was having too much fun at Open Mic Night here at Medium Dreams to liveblog the episode. I do, however, have an opinion.

Maggie-the-doll seriously creeped me out. I mean seriously. I have never understood the attraction of hard plastic dolls like that. As a kid, I gravitated to soft and squishy dolls and cuddly stuffed animals. I cannot imagine trying to curl up in bed with something hard and plastic. But I digress.

What was good:

  • We got more Devalos backstory. Yay! Though it is a sad backstory indeed. Will he and Lily ever find out why their daughter, Ariana, committed suicide? How sad and horrible to have a child die before a parent, but then to have it be suicide. And she tried to call both of the parents just beforehand so now they have the guilt of thinking if only they had spoken with her they could have prevented it? Horrible. Awful. Sad.
  • The charlatan, money-grubbing, fake medium. LOVE that they showed a big ole faker claiming to be able to contact the dead…for money. Just like the real Allison DuBois does.
  • Scanlon’s line about Raggedy Ann. (See Brett’s review above.) It would have been nice to see a bit more of Scanlon this episode, though.
  • Ariel’s British accent when practicing for the school play. She’s pretty good!
  • Oliver: “I really don’t have any parents and I already wish I’d never been born so, if you don’t mind, may I please speak with your wife?”
  • The pox! THE POX!
  • Miguel Sandoval’s real life daughter, Olivia, played his character Devalos’ dead daughter Ariana

What raised more questions than it answered:

  • Devalos’ backstory. He makes the comment that he cannot believe he has worked with Allison all this time and never thought to ask her about his dead daughter. Um, yeah. Thanks for putting that dialog in, writers. You knew we would all be wondering the same thing. And what was with him seeing his daughter and having a conversation with her? Was it the hallucination of a grieving father or is he a teensy bit psychic now that he has faced death himself? If the powers that be actually did have a season arc, they could have set this up a little better.*grump*

So what did you think of this episode?

Sheila, I’m so glad you said that about Devalos and his daughter! That confused me, too. Was she really there talking to him or was he remembering his last face to face with her?

The other thing that bugged me was Devalos saying to his wife at the end, “When you’re dead, you’re dead - there’s no message, etc” EXCUSE ME? After all this time of working with Allison WHAT was he thinking?

Another thing that bugged me - OK his daughter was in Ithaca, New York going to college and killed herself. Why bury her there? Why not fly her body home and bury it in a cemetary close to home? It’s not like they are poor or anything and couldn’t afford to do that.

A third thing that is bugging me is this theme this season of people killing people that are clearly bad people, but getting away with it. I mean, I can understand someone killing someone who had been abusing them, molesting them, etc, but in the eyes of the law that is a crime. I think they are setting a very bad example for folks out there that it is OK to kill someone who is bad and even though someone may know you did it, it’s OK because they deserved to die. “Profiles in Terror” was the other episode this season where it turns out the FBI Profiler was destroying evidence from serial killers so they would be set free so he could follow them and kill them himself. Or something happened at the trial and they were not convicted. Now we have this aunt who kills her abusive father (although we didn’t see any scenes that showed her being abused) and then killing her brother because he was abusing her nephew. Abuse can beget abuse, but I thought this was a very clumsy way of dealing with it.

One more thing, those zinnias didn’t look like zinnias. That was one of my Mom’s favorite flowers.

Yes, more Scanlon time was sorely needed, but the part he had had me laughing out loud. That must be a David Cubitt thing saying “bastard” and “crap” because you don’t ususally hear that from TV cops. I’m sure they say that and much worse. It’s kind of refreshing to hear him talk that way.

Another thing I just remembered - Oliver’s mother - remember when Allison was at the house and the aunt came and said he had a phone call from his Mom - no other explanation as to why he really didn’t have any parents left - what was the story with the Mom?

Joe being mad because it was 2:20 in the morning! I’m sorry, what is abnormal about being called at 2:20 AM in the Dubois household?

Hmmmmm, Scanlon called her on her cell phone early - why not call on the house phone at that hour?

Sheila, I completely missed that part about Miguel’s daughter playing Ariana. That’s good trivia, and good casting.:D

Betty, the end with Devalos telling his wife “when you’re dead you’re dead” bugged me too. I’m going with the idea that he was saying that for her benefit, not because he believed it. I think his hope is that she can let go and move on.

Brett, It’s nice to know someone else thought the same thing, because when I’m home screaming at the TV, the chihuahua and cat just think I’m crazy!

Truly, as a mother, I don’t think you would ever get over the death of a child. I still miss my Mom so much and she’s been gone going on 13 years. I’ve had a couple of clients die, and I cannot bear the thought of going to their place of business without them in it. As a mother of three, I just don’t think life would ever be the same if something happened to any one of them. I know you go on living and each day gets a little better, but I don’t think you ever recover from something like that.

Brett: Great piece! I am so happy when I can link to good writing. About Miguel Sandoval’s daughter: he keeps pictures of his real family displayed behind Devalos’ desk. When I visited the set, the producer pointed out the pic of the daughter and said she is also an actress. When asked if there were any plans to have her appear on the show, however, she said no. Hm…methinks the question gave her an idea. Heh.

Betty: I am still confused by Oliver’s mom. She was on the phone at one point, as you said, but then Oliver said he doesn’t have any parents. Yet the aunt mentioned the mom again when she said there was a lot to do back in San Francisco. I’ll have to watch my Tivo’s recording again and see if I can pick anything else up.
