Medium Review: The One Behind the Wheel

by Sheila on February 15th, 2007

Brett’s review of The One Behind the Wheel (MED-049) is up at TVSquad.

EXCERPT – Really, the best part of the episode was the look at Joe and Allison’s relationship. They are one of the great romances on television. When Joe tells Allison/Sandra, “Being with Allison is the party.”, it is so genuine and sweet. You just have to feel for the guy. His scene leading up to that, where he leaves the Valentine’s voice mail, was also very good. “Where are you?” It was a welcome look at just what it is that Joe puts into their relationship, and why he does it.

I totally agree with Brett’s review. This was one of the best episodes of the season so far.

Yes, I too found this episodes one of the best of the year so far. Maybe even my number one, but only time will tell that. I so agree with the review and hope to see more of this great stuff in furture.

Just an FYI on ratings this week:

    Medium 6.1/10
    Lost 8.5/14

    My Name is Earl 5.8/9
    The Office 5.3/8
    Scrubs 3.9/6
    30 Rock 3.5/5

Lost has good ratings but is considerably down from the previous season. I think Mediums numbers are holding up pretty well, considering the stunt casting CBS has done on CSI NY and with Lost coming back with such huge hype. Medium hasn’t gotten nearly the press or love of those Thursday night NBC shows, but it doing better consistently than they are.

This may sound like a silly question, but I have really never understood what those numbers mean. There are 2 of them for each show, and the second number is not the same. Can anyone explain it to me? Thanks.

Holly, I’m no expert, but I beleive the first set of numbers is the market share and the second number is in millions of viewers, so 6.1/10 means the market share is 6.1 with 10 million viewers - I think.

They further break it down into total viewers which for some reason may differ slightly and ages with the 18-49 being considered ideal.

Remember when “Murder She Wrote” was on CBS in original eps? I believe at the time it was canceled after many years on the air because they weren’t attracting the “desirable” age group, i.e, they had too many older viewers and not enough in the younger age bracket, although the total number of viewers was very strong. There may have been some other issues with Angela Landsbury being tired, but CBS decided to young down its demographic by shelving the shows with the oldest viewers.

Advertisers consider the younger group to have more disposable income to spend on their products. I don’t necessarily agree with that - after all, how many college age kids or kids right out of college have money?

Thanks for the help. So, I guess Medium really isn’t doing that badly afterall. Great news!

Actually, Betty, not to disagree with you, but the two numbers represent the show’s rating and the market share, not the actual number of viewers. While Medium did draw a 10 share this week, which was up from an 8 last week, it only had 8.6 million viewers, which was also up by .5 million from last week. So the show is holding its own despite the return of Lost, yet it’s still losing its time slot, coming in third, especially in the younger demographic that you mentioned. That is what concerns me about those numbers, because the 18-49 age group is the group that all of the networks covet, for whatever reason, and Lost and CSI:NY are consistently winning that group,(though not because of me). I am fervently hoping and praying that this new show on NBC will tank and they will move Medium back to Monday nights. It seems everyone in the free world agrees with us, except the programming execs at NBC.
And about the episode, I LOVED it!! It was the best show ever of Medium and my new favorite ep. Patricia and Jake’s performances had me in tears, and as someone on another board said, it was so good it hurt to watch it, but in a good way.

Well, I had a good dream about it … and the numbers looked awesome! lol

I loved the interaction between Joe and Scanlon, which we never see. I liked seeing the two of them together. I was inclined at first to feel some bonding between them … However, I did get a gruff, uncomfortable (yet wanting to be helpful) feel from Scanlon (toward Joe). Just what I expected, acutally.
