Medium Review: We Had a Dream

by Sheila on March 1st, 2007

Brett’s review of We Had a Dream (MED-051) is up at TVSquad.

EXCERPT – The big conspiracy with Scanlon and DiNovi had me going. Maybe it’s because I’m not a huge fan of the character, but I was all ready to accept that she was bitchy enough to actually pull the police protection. It did make for an exciting ending. When Scanlon popped up outside the door I was completely surprised. There were all kinds of scenarios running through my head as to how Allison was going to get out of this one. Brigitte’s baseball bat? Frying pan? Full review

I loved this episode!

  • It had Eric Stoltz, an excellent actor. Underrated for sure. I always enjoy seeing him on screen.
  • More of Devalos and Scanlon.
  • Written by Javier Grillo-Marxuach. How can you not love something Javi writes?

I hated this episode.

  • Where was Eric Stoltz? Sure he was there, but there was not much of him. I wonder if they shot many more scenes than they actually used because it seemed like they could have given him more screen time.
  • More of DiNovi. Glenn Gordon Caron is making it clear his newly minted bride is with the show for good. Dammit.

But more importantly, what did you think?

12 opinions for Medium Review: We Had a Dream

I’m still trying to figure out what the deal was with the lack of screentime for Stoltz. My only real guess is that they wrote the script not knowing whether or not they were going to get him, so they didn’t make it a priority.

Also, another one for your loved it list, and something I forgot to put in my review, Marie’s repeated “Yeahs”. She’s the cutest kid on TV.

Brett always writes such great reviews! It was a really good episode with so much suspense!

Eric Stoltz is such a good actor, it doesn’t take a boat load of screen time to turn in a chilling performance! They guy totally creeped me out!

I would have liked to have seen Scanlon blow him away, but he was protecting Allison.

Just a small point of law - they shot the guy for threatening them with a chair? Don’t get me wrong, I am glad the guy is dead, but was the guy armed?

Last week’s poll was so timely with this week’s episode! Joe saying the neighbors were complaining because there were so many police cars, there wasn’t any place to park. Imagine what her neighbors are thinking now! Imagine that call to the insurance company, “Yes, this is Joe Dubois, an escaped serial killer was trying to break into our house and was trying to kill my wife and smashed in our patio door with a chair.”

Although I am not the fan of DiNovi, especially hooking up with Scanlon, I think the writers did handle most of their exchanges pretty well, and for once, DiNovi wasn’t stiff as a board. I did not like the way they had Scanlon thanking her because “I don’t think I would have gotten here without you” was totally out of line. C’mon, Di Novi isn’t exactly the sharpest tack in the box people. Scanlon is way smarter when it comes to this stuff - it’s his job - since when does he need help to do his job?

I think this is one of the best. Some people criticized Allison for not knowing about the roommate. Let’s face it, it was a losing sitution. If she’d sent the cops to the apartment/house, he would have gone to the rooftop.

I still kind of wish DiNovi was still in the dark about Allison.
    Liquor delivered? Who knew!

I was surprised that they hyped Eric Stoltz so much in the previews and then he had so little screen time. But I guess that’s just Medium. He was still creepy as hell, though.

And Betty!! The HUG!!! Following The Hug, I completely forgave everyone involved with the show for putting the deputy mayor on my TV again. That was the cutest hug. I wonder, would it bug Joe if he were in the room?

I actually didn’t mind the deputy mayor in the scene in Scanlon’s apartment. Ever since the premiere ep in which Scanlon left the restaurant without taking the key box, I’ve visualized him opening the door and finding her sitting on his sofa (glaring woodenly, perhaps holding a shotgun). Now that we’ve gotten that scene out of the way, however, it’s high time that the character die in a overly tragic manner like all of the other women in Scanlon’s life who aren’t Allison. Has there been a poll on this site for how to kill her off? My vote is for someone to blow up her car for political reasons. Anything works for me, really, though.

And would anyone live next to the Dubois family? Holy crap. If I lived in that neighborhood and there was a homeowner’s association, I’d have tried to get them kicked out long ago. There was a dead serial killer on their lawn! I’d love to see some of their neighbors in a future ep.

    Liquor delivery … nice.

Let me start with an OH MY GOSH!!! That scene at the end with Troyer outside her house freaked me out! Okay, now that I got that out of the way, I must say that that episode was my favorite episode of the season. It seemed like they had an equal concentration of every character, which has been unusual lately (last week for example, there was a whole lot of Scanlon but not much Devalos). And how it said “Wrong roommate, Allison” on the wall, yeah, that freaked me out, too. Now, I liked how they brought DiNovi back together with Scanlon. I told you she would get better with the acting thing! She’s not stupid–I liked how she was able to pick up on all the clues and know that something was up. Well I say yay for her and Scanlon, that’s what I say. This episode was absolutely awesome!

nansee you are so with me girlfriend!

I think, now that you mention it, someone from Scanlon’s drug past should come back to get revenge on him. After all Elena was a Cabrera - a big drug family and was killed by a cop - who happend to have been a friend of Scanlon’s.

For revenge, the bad guy or guys could shoot, stab, blow up, strangle, oh I don’t care how, kill DiNovi! Scanlon would have some great stuff to work with - Emmy nom stuff if you know what I mean - especially if he tinkers with the idea of doing drugs again - maybe even does some to dull the pain - and Allison is the only one who can help him! We’d be rid of DiNovi, Scanlon would get some much deserved screen time and the world would be safe from Tina DiJoseph until GCC casts her in a new series.

I’ll probably wear out the rewind button on my VCR watching that hug again and again and again and again!

Okay, you know what I’m going to say. I don’t really think that killing DiNovi off is really the right way to go. She does have some issues, but so does Scanlon. They can help each other through them! I can see her being really good for him. Great relationship. I, personally, liked seeing her last night and I don’t think she’s going anywhere. Just my opinion though…

I agree with the neighbor thing, though. I can’t imagine someone who’s escaped from prison being shot next door to me.

Betty: I KNEW you would love this ep! Anything with more Scanlon, right? I was so ticked at him for using Allison as bait like that and scaring the CRAP out of her (and me!). I can’t believe she forgave him so quickly. But I’ll have to admit that I did too when I saw THAT HUG. That was so sweet! And I’m wondering just how much he did tell DiNovi about Allison. Did he spill everything? Or did he make something up to cover for her? And do we trust this woman enough to share Allison’s secret with her? She is a politician, you know. I don’t think I trust her, and I hope he didn’t tell her everything.

But about this ep. It is one of the best they have done this season, by far. It scared the crap out of me. There were a few times I think my heart stopped, and I forgot to breathe, especially in the last ten minutes. That last part was freaking awesome!! And how much did you love Bridget looking for the baseball bat to beat up the serial killer guy? I LOVE her! All in all, this ep was full of ‘Wow’ moments and ‘Oh, my God’ moments that kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. It was almost like watching a horror movie, it was so good. It’s definitely at the top of my list of favorite eps of Medium.

And the next poll is brought to you by Nansee: If DiNovi were to die, how should she go out? It will go up this weekend.

  • Betty
    Mar 2, 2007 at 4:46 pm

Dawn, of course I loved the ep!

Did anyone else want to reach through the phone and slap Scanlon when Allison called him the first time and he asks, “Who am I speaking to?” Duh! Just how many women call him on his cell phone in the middle of the night?

Holly, I know you like DiNovi with Scanlon, but I’m with Dawn - we can’t trust the biatch! After all she is a politician.

I hope Scanlon didn’t spill much to DiNovi, just that Troyer had threatened her because of her involvement in getting him arrested before. Totally don’t trust her with the information or putting it past her to use it against Devalos, Scanlon, or Allison in the future.

Why didn’t DiNovi talk to Devalos instead of staking out Scanlon’s apartment? Allison works directly under Devalos. I wish she had lost or thrown away that key! Better yet, I wish Scanlon hadn’t left it there in the first place!

FYI “Four Dreams” is scheduled to be on the Lifetime Network this Saturday and next Saturday at 10 PM CST. I’m so excited about that!

A good question Betty. I suppose the reason for her to go to Scanlon instead of Devalos, aside from the obvious romance angel, was because she was asking why police officers were assigned somewhere. That’s shaky, but probable.

I do appreciate your love of all things Scanlon though. And it makes me wonder, are you getting Medium in HD yet? Because he looks even better. :)

Oh Brett, now you are just taunting me, tsk, tsk!

Unfortunately, I do not have HD TV. My service provider has it available, I just don’t have any HD television sets. I hope to sometime before I die, but none in the forseeable future.

Every minute of Scanlon time is a good minute for me! I just have to keep that gag response in check whenever he shares screen time with Di Novi!

    Mar 6, 2007 at 9:07 pm

[…] So if DiNovi were to suddenly and unexpectedly die, how should she go out? A quick and painless death? A political death? A painful and gruesome death? (Poll idea by Nansee) […]
