Medium Spoiler: Four Clips From Four Dreams - Clip 1 Review

Patricia Arquette and Thomas Jane (iVillage)

Not only did I get to tour the set of Medium and meet the movers and shakers, I also got an exclusive viewing of footage from the Season Three premiere. Well, exclusive for me and three other online journalists. And of course the people who created it have seen it. And probably those who acted in it. And the crew. And the publicity people. And probably family members of all of the aforementioned. BUT I DON’T CARE. As far as I am concerned, it was for me, only me, and nobody else but me.

And now for you.

I saw four clips in all and captured the audio on my MP3 player/recorder. I will summarize each of the four clips for you over the coming week leading up to the Season Three premiere on November 15th. Think of it as liveMP3blogging.

First up, the opening sequence, where four people each have a dream. Allison provides the voiceover narration.

DREAM #1 - DEVALOS

Manuel Devalos stands waist-deep in a pool of water wearing a full business suit. Beautiful music plays as his hands flutter above the water.

Devalos’ wife stands at the side of the bed looking down at his sleeping form.

Wife: Manuel. Manual, wake up. What did you do?

Devalos, groggily: What are you doing? What are you talking about?

Wife: Geez Manny, are you alright?

Devalos: What do you mean?

Wife, in a whisper: You wet the bed.

Devalos ends up in the hospital, but I do not know why or for how long or if he even survives. I mean, of course he survives. He is an integral part of the show. He cannot die. Can he?

DREAM #2 - SCANLON

Lee Scanlon plays with his son at a family fun park on a bright, sunny day. Water gun firing range. Rides. Miniature golf. They laugh and hug alot. It is touching to see Scanlon’s “dad” side.

Voiceover: Our dreams reveal us to ourselves. The people we are. The people we would like to be.

Scanlon returns to the miniature golf rental shack and places the clubs on the counter. He places the child on the counter next to them. The clerk picks up the child and places him on a shelf next to another rental kid.

Clerk: You know a lot of people tell me the game’s even more fun when they bring their own kid rather than renting one.

Scanlon: I know, I heard that.

Clerk: You know how to get one?

Scanlon: I know people.

Scanlon wakes abruptly to a ringing phone and picks up the receiver.

Scanlon: Wait a second. What are you talking about, the head’s blown off?

We hear another phone ring in the background, a cell phone, and a woman dashes out from under the covers on the other side of the bed, grabs her phone, and disappears into the bathroom. Hey, it’s Lynn DiNovi, the Mayor’s Liason!

WOO-HOO, Scanlon finally gets some sex! (When I said those very words to Glenn Caron, he said, “Scanlon gets a lot of sex.” Aw, it couldn’t have happened to a nicer curmudgeon.)

We proceed to hear both Scanlon and DiNovi’s one-sided telephone conversations:

Scanlon: Do me a favor and look around. Sometimes people hide under the bed, in a closet.

DiNovi: No I have no idea where the mayor is. It’s 5:52 in the morning. I’m guessing he’s at home asleep.

Scanlon: Wait a second. Gimme an address.

DiNovi, dejected: How many children?

Scanlon: No, don’t move anything. I’ll get there. I’m maybe 35 minutes away.

DiNovi: I’ll be right down there.

Whatever is going on, it does not sound good. Kids? Heads blown off? No, it does not sound good at all.

DREAM #3 - BRIDGETTE

Voiceover: Some people have dreams that amaze them and entertain them.

Bridgette dreams in cartoon featuring the Monkeyheads. Mama Monkeyhead is very serious as she paints famous portraits on canvas. Mischievous Baby Monkeyhead steals her paint roller to paint his own amusing versions of her work.

The Monkeyheads were created by Van Partible (Johnny Bravo) specifically for this episode of Medium. When asked if we would be seeing more of the Monkeyheads, co-executive producer Javier Grillo-Marxuach said, “Don’t get attached to the Monkeyheads.”

It does not look good for Mama and Baby Monkeyhead.

DREAM #4 - ALLISON

Voiceover: And then there are my dreams.

A beautiful Asian woman speaks to you in her language. You see through the eyes of her bedmate so you are in the scene. Very groovy. First you think the woman is standing but then the camera tilts ninety degrees and you realize she is lying in bed, as are you.

Man: Speak English. (Ooh, what a gravelly and sexy voice. I cannot wait to see this guy!)

Woman: You want English? Why you come to Indonesia? Go home to America.

You get up, as evidence by the change in camera perspective and creaking of bed springs. You are now looking down at the woman lying on her stomach in bed, propped up on her elbows.

Woman: Where are you going?

Man: I’m going to the airport. I’m going home. I feel like going home.

Woman, laughing: You can’t do dat. You intoxicated. You don’t even have a ticket. Besides, this early in the morning is not time for traveling. It’s time to make love.

You toss a loose wad of bills onto the bed in the vicinity of her hands.

Man: Keep the change.

You kick-start your motor bike and take off, the dirt road falling away as you pass villagers with livestock and tree after tree after tree. It is hot. It is dusty. You are going too fast, especially for a drunk man.

Finally we get a glimpse of his face. It is Thomas Jane, Patricia Arquette’s real-life husband! He blinks and rubs his eyes and drives too fast. We see his face; the dusty road; his face; trees whizzing by; his face; a bus parked across the road in front of him. His face registers belated surprise before he slams on the brakes and lays his bike down, disappearing under the bus.

Allison, sitting up in bed: Whoa.

Joe: What’s the matter? What’s going on? Dream? You want to talk about it?

Allison: I don’t know. I’m not sure there’s anything to talk about. I mean, it took place in Indonesia. I don’t know anyone in Indonesia. You would have liked it though. There was a naked girl in it.

Joe: Wow. This is weird. I just had the exact same dream.

Allison: Was there a guy in your dream who got his head chopped off?

Joe: No. I just had the naked girl part.

Allison: I see.

Joe: You had a guy…kch (makes a throat-cutting gesture)? Well I hope you’re happy. Now I’m afraid to go back to sleep and finish the dream.

Allison: Oh yeah? Welcome to my world.

Cut to opening music and credits.

____________________

Summary: Devalos is in the hospital with a mysterious illness; Scanlon is having sex; Bridgette is dreaming in cartoon; and Allison is dreaming of naked women in Indonesia. It’s a world gone mad. And that is just the first six minutes!

So, what do you think?

Not sure what to think, but it’s enough intrigue that I would wait for commercials and continue watching. =)

Not exactly true because I Tivo everything!

You are going to love it. LOVE IT. My paltry words cannot describe the sheer brilliance of this episode. It shines, baby.

The first part of 4 dreams scared me to death. I wanted to see the second one for closure, but I couldn’t stay awake. Can someone please tell me what happens,=Why was the dead boyfriend in her house, what is the matter with Scanlon? Who knocked the lady and the kid off the road? Do they catch the guy that’s killing the families?

    Thank you!
