A chronicle of my adventures visiting the set of Medium

What’s not to like about an energetic, well-spoken teenage girl who also happens to be extraordinarily pretty? Nothing, that’s what.
I met Sofia Vassilieva half way through the set tour. We were introduced as my group waited for an opportunity to sneak into the kitchen/family room set and watch Patricia and Jake rehearse a scene from Season 3, Episode 8, ‘Mother’s Little Helper.’ Sofia’s October 22nd birthday had just passed, so I said “Happy belated birthday” when we shook hands. I must have taken her by surprise because her face brightened and she said, “Thank you!” And then we got shushed because there must be QUIET ON THE SET during rehearsal. We were not actually on the set but we were just outside of it so we looked appropriately mortified and tried to keep our giggles quiet.
Once we got the all-clear to yak at will, Patrick Lee (Sci-Fi Wire) stuck his micro-cassette recorder in Sofia’s face and we were off on a real live interview. With microphones! Here is the skinny:

Mother’s Little Helper (S03E08 aka MED-046) is a big episode for Sofia.
Tell us a little bit about this episode.
It’s about Allison and Ariel sharing dreams together. There’s crying, there’s visions … a lot of mother-daughter stuff.
Do you have a boyfriend in this episode?
There’s a guy. (laughs) There is always a guy. And there is some fun bloody stuff, too.
Do you get bloody?
Oh, I get really bloody.
Do you like doing the scenes where Ariel is having psychic activity?
Oh my god yes. I live for those days and for those scenes and shots. It’s really fun.
As far as the psychic stuff goes, did you talk to Allison DuBois?
She is a really, really sweet woman. Very nice. Very wonderful. I have never actually had any “medium” moments with her. I have never seen her actually “do the thing” but she is a really great person.
Do you believe in this stuff? Why do you believe?
Yes. Because I’m the kind of person that likes to believe in things that are questionable. And it’s questionable and that’s why I believe it. Because it seems that there has to be some link between the dead and I think that this is one of them.
Have you had any kind of supernatural experience yourself?
Oh god, I have deja vu all the time but I don’t really know if that’s supernatural, is it? I think everybody has it. You always have those awkward things like “I totally felt that coming” or you pick up the phone and know who it is before it even rings.
So you knew I was going to ask you that.
(laughs) No I didn’t know that!
What makes Ariel distinctive as a person?
She is a teen. She goes through all of this completely teen stuff. Boys. Every teenager or every parent can relate.
How do the DuBois girls feel about each other.
They will fight forever but they are always there for each other.
The funnest part about that whole interview? Getting to hold my microphone up in Sofia’s face and pretend I was a real journalist.
The second funnest? Looking down at our four journalist hands as we held our recording devices out toward Sofia:
- Jennifer Godwin (StyleNetwork/E!Online) with a teeny, tiny state-of-the-art thing that she plugs directly into her computer to transfer the recordings;
- PatrickLee (Sci-Fi Wire) with a palm-sized micro-cassette recorder;
- Me with my palm-sized Zen:M with built-in microphone;
- And then there was Abbie Bernstein (Dreamwatch) with her gigantic tape recorder like the one I used to have back in the ’80’s. I don’t know how she held it up for so long without losing all blood flow to her arm. Now that’s a dedicated reporter.
