Medium - The Experience: The Journalists

Medium - The Experience
A chronicle of my adventures visiting the set of Medium
1-Arrival | 2-Encounter With Maria Lark | 3-The Sets | 4-Patricia & Jake | 5-The Journalists | 6-Sofia | 7-The Ones I Didn’t Meet

After my visit to the Medium set, I got to thinking about journalists and bylines and who gets credit for the writing. Normally, it would not occur to me to wonder about this sort of thing. I mean, if you write it, your name goes on it, right?

I am so naive.

When I started looking for the stories of my fellow Medium-visit journalists so I could link to them, I found Patrick Lee right away. He writes for Sci-Fi Wire, has his own byline, and is everywhere on the sci-fi scene. I linked
to his first Medium story
and he has posted several more since, along with about a bazillion other articles on sci-fi shows.

Next I looked for Abbie Bernstein. She, too, has her own byline but guess what? Dreamwatch is print-only so I can’t link to her. Bah. Abbie did, however, promise to send me a copy of the article when it comes out January 2007. She is on what is called a “long lead:” a significant amount of time between when the information is obtained and when the story is published. I will post an excerpt when it becomes available. In the meantime, check out Abbie’s movie reviews at Rotten Tomatos. At least I think that’s the same Abbie Bernstein. (Could there really be two Abbie Bernstein’s who happen to be journalists who happen to write about the entertainment industry? HEY ABBIE! If that’s not you, let me know and I will edit this post.)

Last, I looked for Jennifer Godwin. I found her personal website, which includes an article scrapbook, but the most recent articles is dated September 2005. (She does warn the scrapbook is only updated “frequently. ish.” Heh.) I could not find her on StyleNetwork.com or E!Online, per her business card. Weird. I finally emailed her and she kindly pointed me to the Watch With Kristen Chat page. Here is an excerpt of Jennifer’s contribution to the November 13, 2006, chat:

From requiem4adream: I’m so excited Medium is finally back!

‘Tis good news, no? The two-hour season premiere of Medium (this Wednesday on NBC) features not just a guest appearance by Thomas Jane (aka Mr. Patricia Arquette) as the ghost of a man from Alison’s past, but four hand-drawn animation segments featuring the most fabulous Monkeyhead gang! It’s a fantastic cartoon original to the show, albeit one in which the adorable Monkeyheads come to a rather unfor…well, you should watch. Also in season three (don’t read if you don’t want to know!), you can expect the hospitalization of District Attorney Devalos, the return of Texas Ranger Capt. Push (yay!), the apparent return of the psychotic phantom Dr. Charles Walker (boo!) and the revelation that the littlest DuBois (baby Marie) might also have the gift.

From daddylonglegs: Do you have any Medium spoilers?

Well, I can tell you that in the season premiere, Det. Scanlon gets it on with a hot blonde.

Now here is where the whole byline thing gets me. I got myself all worked up about Kristin’s name being all over the piece with Jennifer nowhere to be found. How dare she! Who does she think she is! Fraud! Stealer of other people’s glory!

And then I found Jennifer’s credit. Oops. If you click over, scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page and there it is:

—Additional reporting by Korbi Ghosh and Jennifer Godwin

So it’s there, but really, did any of you notice it when you clicked over before I pointed it out? I missed it the first nine times I clicked over there, and the Medium content is even at the bottom where you are likely to see the footnote.

Sigh.

What I learned:

  • Read the footnotes
  • Do not assume the name at the top of the page is the real writer
  • Get a job working for a high profile journalist so you get to go to all the events he/she cannot attend and meet all the fun people
