Medium - The Experience: The Ones I Didn’t Meet

Medium - The Experience
A chronicle of my adventures visiting the set of Medium
1-Arrival | 2-Encounter With Maria Lark | 3-The Sets | 4-Patricia & Jake | 5-The Journalists | 6-Sofia | 7-The Ones I Didn’t Meet

I was surprised at the opportunity to meet as many of the cast members that I did. Of the ones who were not on-set that day, I did get some good trivia.

Madison and Miranda Carabello

  • Madison and Miranda are twins who play baby Marie DuBois. Due to child labor laws, they are only allowed to work 3 1/2 to 4 hours a day. So that’s why really young children on TV are always played by twins! All this time I thought it was because they were too young to pay attention all day and would get out of hand when they got tired so they needed a backup doppleganger. In retrospect, that was kind of a silly idea. What did I think, they forced one to nap so she would be bright and chipper when the other one petered out? Sometimes my logic is a bit shaky.
  • Maria Lark described the Carabello girls as, “One is a tomboy like me and one is a pretty little princess like Sofia.” Then Sofia made a face at her and Maria cracked up.
  • Miranda gravitates to men while Madison likes women. Executive Producer Ron Schwary told us their preference was so extreme in the first season that if you saw Joe (Jake Weber) holding baby Marie in a scene, it was Miranda, and if you saw Allison (Patricia Arquette) holding Marie, it was Madison.
  • SPOILER: In ‘Mother’s Little Helper’ (MED-046), we discover baby Marie can steal cable. They find her staring at a TV showing only electronic snow and laughing because she can see the cartoons.

David Cubitt

  • Did you know David Cubitt has six children? Five boys and one girl, says producer Laurie Seidman. No wonder Scanlon is grumpy. He must really be quite tired.
  • Seidman also said Cubitt is a fierce ping-pong competitor. He and Miguel Sandoval wear their ping-pong paddles in the back of their pants when they shoot scenes. As soon as the director yells “cut,” they are back at the ping pong table. In fact Cubitt is such a ping-pong fanatic, he bought a second ping-pong table for the set because the one they already had wasn’t good enough.
  • Oh, and he’s Canadian, eh.

Miguel Sandoval

  • I got nothing on Miguel Sandoval but the ping-pong obsession he shares with David Cubitt, he is happily married, and has a daughter who is also an actress.

Of all these tidbits, David Cubitt having six children surprised me the most. Who has six kids these days? I wonder if any of them are twins.

I also have a little trouble imaging D.A. Devalos walking around with a ping-pong paddle stuck down the back of his pants. I guess every powerful executive is entitled to his own ‘dress for success’ secret.

Hi, I noticed on David Cubitt’s IMDB site that someone wrote he married a widow with 6 kids. Is this true? Now I’m curious.

I don’t know for sure but it seems to fit. Producer Laurie Seidman, who led the tour of the Medium set, just sort of mentioned in passing he has 6 kids. I think she said 5 boys and 1 girl. Now I’m curious to know the details, too!

6 Kids! Good grief! I am 90% certain I don’t have the skills to handle that many. I still can’t water a plant with regularity. Good thing my sprinklers are on a timer.
