Medium Dreams

Method to His Madness Rerun Open Mic

by Katelyn on November 11th, 2007

Method to His Madness is one of the creepiest Medium episodes there are and really shows Patricia Arquette’s amazing acting ability. I keep forgetting she’s supposed to be Allison as she plays the crazy artistic killer. She moves and acts so differently when she is “dreaming”.

By the way, don’t you just love the way she tells Joe, “I’m just not myself tonight.”

Hey, Katelyn, where were you tonight? I dropped in before the show but there was no one here, and no post so I watched it by myself. This is one of my favorite episodes because Patricia is just so creepy when she’s playing this “alternate” side of Allison, when the killer has taken over her. She’s just so amazing when she does that it’s startling to see the differences in Allison and this other character. I love this episode, mainly because it is one of the creepiest ones of the show, and also because I love the ones where Patricia gets to really stretch herself and show off her incredible range and talent. This one and the “One Behind the Wheel” are two of the best when it comes to that. I still say if she had submitted “Wheel” instead of “Rewind”, she would have won the Emmy this year.

But this one is one of my all-time favorites. And I think another favorite of mine is coming up soon too. The original Sonny Troyer episode “SOS”. I love that one too. It’s another really scary one, although not as scary as it’s follow-up.

I love when she tells Joe “I’m just not myself tonight”. This show has some classic lines. (Gotta give props to the writers). I also like when she comes home after stalking the girl at the grocery store, and she and Joe fight, and Joe is freaked out by her bizarre behavior, so he sends the girls to stay with friends. And then when she comes home and the girls are still not home, and she gets angry. I felt sorry for her then, because her anguish was so evident. Another example of Patricia’s amazing talent.

Just another fantastic job by everyone involved with this show.I really hope the strike ends soon so they can get back to work. (Or so they don’t have to quit work, whatever the case may be). I really miss my Medium and I’m gonna be sick if it gets interrupted or pulled off tv.

    Hi Dawn,
I don’t know if it was my computer or the blog, but I couldn’t get things to work. I got the open mic post to go up about five minutes into the show and then everything froze up. I tried rebooting, but it was still so slow I couldn’t get comments to post. Today, things are working just fine, of course.

This is one of my favorite episodes because of Patricia’s acting and it was so frustrating not to be able to do the open mic. I hope next week works out better!

Yes, this is one of THE creepiest episodes ever - especially when Allison is in that bar! OMG!

Just you just love the fact that Scanlon was the one playing devil’s advocate with Devalos for a change by taking Allison’s side? That was so cool and the fact that he followed up on all those German Shepherd dogs and called Allison part way through? Somewhere in the 3rd season they kind of lost some of that closeness between Scanlon and Allison.

I sure hope the strike gets solved soon. If you get the DVD sets and listen to the “Making of” and the “Story of” Medium, you have to have a lot of respect for the creative process that goes into this show! Despite people like Michael Aussielo at TV Guide who try to make it sound like it’s just chaos on the set of Medium all the time, when you listen to the people actually involved in writing and producing the show, there really is a “Method to their Madness!”

Yeah, you’re right, Betty. Seems the only time that guys like Ausiello write about Medium is to print something negative, while they fall all over themselves fawning over shows like Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy, 24, Lost, and Heroes. It’s almost like the producers of those shows are paying them to write exclusively about their shows.

But back to Patricia’s amazing acting ability as Katelyn mentioned. It’s almost scary how effective she is when she plays another character. She takes on an entirely different physicality when she does it, and she looks, moves and sounds different. It’s absolutely mind-blowing when she does. And what’s funny is that she doesn’t think she can do that. She said in the podcast on FatFreeFilm that she saw Sean Penn, but she couldn’t do it. That’s when she dropped the F-bomd in the podcast, lol. But the writer of the “Wheel” episode even commented in the special features of the season 3 dvd that Patricia took on a different personality and appearance when she was playing “Sandra” as opposed to playing Allison. She does the same thing with this episode.
