Mother’s Little Helper - First Thoughts

by Sheila on January 3rd, 2007

The bloody, Carrie-esque beginning was great! Although I did go, “Hey, look, a Carrie rip-off!” Probably not quite what the writer’s had in mind. Or maybe they assumed their audience was not old enough to have seen Carrie when it premiered in 1976 so would think the bucket-o-blood was new and clever. Technically I wasn’t old enough to see it, but my cousin was and she told an excellent story. I had nightmares about the hand coming up out of the grave at the end for weeks.

But I digress.

The split screen showing Allison and Ariel’s last dreams simultaneously was pretty cool, although it was a tad confusing trying to watch them both at once. They muted mom and boyfriend and made it a distance shot, but still I had to try to watch them in case, you know, he knocked her down or otherwise maimed her. You never know. I mean, what if he did and I missed it because I was watching daughter and jilted fiance?

If I had to name my favorite part, I would have to say the kitchen scene where Joe plays a board game with Bridgette, then sends her to bed so he and Allison can talk. Allison tells him Claire’s internet stalker was a 15 year old boy yaddy yaddy yadda. Why is this so special? Oh no reason…except I WAS THERE. That’s right. That is the scene I saw them rehearse live and in person on the set of Medium. Uh-huh. Uh-huh. Uh-huh uh-huh uh-huh.

And now I finally know what they were saying. I couldn’t hear a thing that day. Too far away. All I remember is Patricia asking if they had a water line connected to the sink so she could turn on the tap during the scene. Answer: no. (Visit The Angry Anthropologist for more behind-the-scenes props and plumbing fun from a working actor.)

So those are my first thoughts. What are yours?

1 opinion for Mother’s Little Helper - First Thoughts

Hummm…different than the norm, but still a pretty good episode. I liked the split screen with the dreams at the end and I liked the focus on Ariel for a change–it seems like they tend to spend more time with Bridgette on this show. I like Bridgette, but she tends to steal the show sometimes. There really was not all that much detective work with this one–the dreams told them everything they needed to know. Ariel was mad, and them she came to terms to what was going on, and I liked that. Seems realistic, as this show always does. Also, with her being crowned queen with the guy she likes…what girl wouldn’t want something like that to happen to her. Prefect!

Speaking of seeing something you have seen in real life in television…ever since I’ve been back from my summer vacation in New York City, I keep movies with places that I’ve been. Weird, isn’t it?

All in all, I would not like every episode to be like this (major focus on one of the daughters) but it is nice every once in a while. Good episode.
