Medium Dreams

Open Mic Night: The Boy Next Door

by Sheila on March 7th, 2007

Welcome to Open Mic Night at Medium Dreams!

Each Wednesday we open up the comments so you can talk amongst yourselves before, during, and after the show.

This week’s episode is The Boy Next Door (MED-052). We get to see Allison as a teenager again and meet her mom, played by Peri Gilpin from Frasier. We also get to see Jim True-Frost as the teenage boy next door.

What, you say you’ve never heard of Jim True-Frost? Well, I didn’t know who he was either but I DID see him on Law & Order:Criminal Intent a few years ago. All the best actors have guested on Law & Order:Criminal Intent. *cough* Jake Weber *cough*

So come to this post to chat about Medium in the comments. Feel free to leave a running commentary as the show airs, even if you are in another time zone. (I am on Pacific Standard Time.) You can talk about the show, gossip about the actors, meet some of your fellow readers and commenters, or go off on a completely unrelated tangent. That is the beauty of Open Mic Night. It is all about the fun.

I will arrive around 7:00pm PST but no need to wait for me. Comments are open as soon as this post goes up.

See you later!

Once again I am the first poster - where is everyone else? I just love this site, it’s the first place I go every day.

Yea! It’s finally Wednesday! A new Medium!!!!!

    Who else hopes we:

    1) Get to see Scanlon shirtless
    2) Get to see Scanlon shirtless and in his skivies
    3) Get to watch Scanlon shave again
    4) Get to see Scanlon for more than 4 lines of dialogue
    5) Get to see a Scanlon love scene (dream or otherwise as long as we get to watch!)
    6) Get to see Scanlon interested in anyone except Di Novi
    7) All of the above

I think we should start bringing virtual refreshments to this shindig.

I’ll start with a pitcher of Margaritas! Anyone else have anything to offer?

  • Dawn
    Mar 7, 2007 at 2:52 pm

I’ll bring the chips and salsa, Betty. But really, give me Joe in his boxers anyday. Nothing against your boy, but I LOVE Joe. Who wants to see more love scenes between him and Allison? Does it seem like they haven’t done that as much this year?
Anyway, yay, it’s Wednesday! I can’t wait to get home so I can watch this ep. But dangit, no new Medium next week. That’s gonna suck!

    See ya tonight!

  • Betty
    Mar 7, 2007 at 3:29 pm

Great Dawn! We can always use chips and salsa.

Hey, we get to see Joe in his boxers almost every week, but Scanlon, that’s a rare thing. I think they’ve actually shown Joe & Allison more times this year after the fact - re: Allison wrapped in the sheet looking as if that is all she is wearing.

If anyone is interested, and I can’t imagine who wouldn’t want to see more of David Cubitt, but each Saturday the Sleuth Channel (308 on Directv) is showing his TV series from 1999 “Turks”. You can watch at 4 PM and 11 PM Saturdays and 12 Noon Sundays Central Standard Time. Occasionally the 11 PM time may change to 11:30 if they run a longer movie before. He plays Mike Turk a cop. William Devane plays the dad, a 30 year cop, Helen Carey plays the Mom, Mary Turk, and interstingly enough she was on “American Embassy” with David. Michael Muhney (late of Veronica Mars)plays his youngest brother Paul Turk (an unlikeable guy in my opinion) and John Michael Armstrong (was on Heroes recently) or something like that plays his middle brother Joey Turk, also a cop. The series only got to make 16 episodes and was cancelled. David had some great scenes with a child on the show for several episodes. He has a wife and son on the show as well, but the kid who played his son isn’t as cute or as good an actor as the other kid who plays a boy from an abusive home. Mike Turk wants to be his foster parent. Sleuth is planning a marathon of Turk episodes on March 17. Kate Walsh (Grey’s Anatomy) had a recurring role as a lawyer and love interest for Joey. She had short blonde hair, not the long red hair she currently has.

You can tell how much natural ability David Cubitt has with children by watching his interaction on this show with the kids - his face just lights up and softens.

On March 9 at 2AM CST, TNT has an episode of “The X Files” with David Cubitt - but you must catch the first minute or so and look quickly to catch him - his hair is puffed up and long - God this guy has beautiful hair! He makes another appearance later in the ep, but is unrecognizable because of the heavy aging make-up.

Saturday, March 17 on the Sci Fi Channel, you can catch “10.5″ the NBC miniseries that starred David Cubitt along with Kim Delaney and Beau Bridges at 7 and 9 PM CST. IMHO, this is not very smartly written, but you see a fair amount of David and if you like disaster movies, it will be your cup of tea. It’s about a mega earthquake affecting the West Coast. David Cubitt plays Dr. Jordan Fisher. There is a sequel to this called “10.5 Apocolypse” and David is also in that one. Don’t know if Sci Fi will show it soon or not.

Jake Weber sighting - Last week Chiller was launched on Channel 257 on Directv - “American Gothic”, a 1/2 hour show aired and Jake Weber played a doctor - I think this show was from the mid 90’s. As most of these channels do, that episode has been repeated already and probably will show several more times.

Back to tonight - anyone in for brownies?

Sheila, I think my post got caught in the Spam filter!

    Betty: Fixed!

  • Sheila

Betty: Do you like David Cubitt? I can’t really tell.

  • Brett
    Mar 7, 2007 at 3:52 pm

Looking forward to this episode. From what I’ve seen so far it looks to have the makings of another good one. I am a little disappointed that we don’t get any Friday Night Lights goodness beforehand though.

  • Betty
    Mar 7, 2007 at 3:52 pm

Thanks Sheila! To answer your question, maybe just a little! Ha Ha!

  • Betty
    Mar 7, 2007 at 3:54 pm

Don’t forget “Crossing Jordan” will now be on just before “Medium” which is fine by me.

  • Betty
    Mar 7, 2007 at 4:11 pm

Another FYI, the boy who played Allison and Joe’s son (in her dream, the child she miscarried or was still born, they weren’t clear on that point) in “Sweet Child O’Mine” from Season 2 will be in the new series, “The Riches” on the F/X channel. I believe it premiers on Monday, March 12.

In her dream it was their son, but in the present he was a boy who is accused of murdering his boss who turns out to be his biological mother. I cannot remember his name, but Gina Hecht played his mother, although she wasn’t his biological mother.

I like Scanlon, but I think I have to agree with Dawn–I love Joe! Every time I see Jake Weber, I just melt. I don’t know what it is about him, but he just seems so perfect to me.

Talking about seeing Medium actors outside of the show, I was flipping through the channels a few days ago and I saw Miguel Sandoval on an episode of Law and Order being arrested! It was weird–you usually don’t think of a D.A. being arrested, but then I had to remind myself he is an actor and can play several different rolls.

Next week is a repeat, but it’s going to work out well for me. I have mid-terms next Thursday and Friday and am going to need my sleep!

    Mar 7, 2007 at 6:15 pm

I think I’ll be happy with Scanlon or Joe in boxers tonight, either way will make it a better night.

  • Sheila
    Mar 7, 2007 at 7:41 pm

Well I hate to disappoint you, and I have no real knowledge about this episode, but if it’s all about young Allison I do not think we will have much chance to see boys in their boxers (or briefs) unless it is a teenage boy.

    I could be wrong.

  • Tracey
    Mar 7, 2007 at 7:45 pm

Yeah I know, 45 minutes into it and no boxer or brief action.

  • Justin
    Mar 7, 2007 at 7:52 pm

Can anyone help me. Who played the young steven or stephen in this episode “The Boy Next Door.” I have seen him in something, and it is driving me nuts.

  • Sheila
    Mar 7, 2007 at 8:01 pm

I think Betty had an excellent idea. Who’s drinkin’? I think I will have my standard Ketel One Vodka and 7-Up. With a cherry, of course.

TV.com lists Kyle Gallner: http://www.tv.com/medium/the-boy-next-door/episode/967998/cast.html. Is that the one you want, Justin? (Charlie asked this question on another post, too. Hope he sees this.)

  • Sheila
    Mar 7, 2007 at 8:11 pm

Okay, I DO suck at drawing a martini glass, but I did not suck that bad. I DID have more spaces in there!

    Mar 7, 2007 at 8:14 pm

does anyone know what song was playing at the end of this episode- the music was great!

  • JCW
    Mar 7, 2007 at 8:47 pm

Well hello Sheila, Betty and all!

For the record, I’ve brought the Seagrams 7 for
seven & sevens. Oh! and Dreyers Turtle ice cream.

So Sheila, are you up on the upcoming guest appearance of The Dog Whisperer?

  • Sheila
    Mar 7, 2007 at 8:58 pm

JCW: *Oh dear lord* Um, why no, no I have not heard anything about that.

I am thinking alcohol was a bad idea. I am sleepy and the show doesn’t start for another hour.

  • Tracey
    Mar 7, 2007 at 9:13 pm

The song at the end is “Sewn” by The Feeling.

  • JCW
    Mar 7, 2007 at 9:15 pm

Wake up sleepy head! Fix yourself an espresso with a shot of something in it and then you’ll have the best of both worlds!

Sorry - was just over at the entry, Allison on Oprah Part Duex, fending off a particularly nasty tempered woman who thinks I should find better things to do with my days than “hate” on Allison….

Anyhow, according to one of the entertainment shows, The Dog Whisperer will appear in an episode about a dog who is possessed!

Perhaps it’s one of those dogs he was accused of mistreating?

  • Sheila
    Mar 7, 2007 at 9:26 pm

Hooray for Tracey answering the question EVERYONE is asking!

JCW: I considered just ignoring the comment for a while. She could have been dissing my post or your comment, who knows? Cranky people make me tired. I love your response.

  • Sheila
    Mar 7, 2007 at 9:29 pm

RobertF linked to the song’s lyrics.

  • JCW
    Mar 7, 2007 at 9:35 pm

Well - I think this is proof positive that Medium employees read this blog. The got my suggestion that Allison needed a ghost cat and - voila! You’ve got an episode about a possessed dog, thus avoiding having to pay me a royalty for the dead cat.

    I hate Hollywood.

  • Sheila
    Mar 7, 2007 at 9:43 pm

Okay, I am taking a 10 minute power nap before the show starts.

    It sucks to get old.

  • JCW
    Mar 7, 2007 at 9:48 pm

OK - It’s getting pretty dead here…. So I shall share with you all a little ditty from Stevie Nick’s Fajita Roundup (Sung to the tune of Dreams,
    from the album, Rumours)

Well here you go again, you say, you want burritos

I sure hope you can keep ‘em down

It’s just a flour tortilla, wrapped around some meat and…

Have you any beans you’d like to sell?

Appropriate, I think - as Nicks is such a metaphysical person. If you haven’t caught this gem - go to Youtube at once!

    Sheila…did you bother?

  • Jenn Bo
    Mar 7, 2007 at 9:56 pm

Wow! Look at all the comments. I’ll catch up and start commenting. The episode starts in 4 minutes for me!

  • Sheila
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:02 pm

JCW: I did! It was hilarious!

You guys didn’t think I’d wake up in time, did you?

  • JCW
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:02 pm

Whoo-hoo! JB is in the house!

  • Jenn Bo
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:02 pm

Excellent opener! I love how everything was reversing around Allison.

  • Jenn Bo
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:04 pm

I thought Sheila was going to miss the 1st 1/2 hr, but you’re here!

JCW: I’ll have to check out the you tube fajita song.

  • Sheila
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:04 pm

All I can say is, “Fat Bobby’s?”

  • Sheila

JennBo, we missed you last week! Ooh, it’s back on.

  • Jenn Bo
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:07 pm

The Lucy Lawless bit was very funny!

  • Sheila
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:12 pm

Okay, I am a little slow. I just figured out this episode is coming from the young Allison’s perspective and everything we see in the “now” is really just her dream.

  • Sheila
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:14 pm

“I don’t know no stinkin’ Stephen.”

    “Hi, my name is Stephen.”

  • Jenn Bo
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:14 pm

It seems a little weird to me also. I like that she seems unaware of her gift at the younger age.

  • Jenn Bo
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:15 pm

    The Stephen line was perfect!

  • Sheila
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:16 pm

Best line so far from Peri Gilpin: “He’s a cat, Allison. He’s out catting around.”

  • Brett
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:17 pm

I had the same problem catching on to all the present day being in young Allison’s dream Sheila. I think I have it straight now.

    Plus, look, it’s Beaver.

  • Sheila
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:17 pm

Hey, preview for Raines. Looks fun!

  • Jenn Bo
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:19 pm

Ah, that’s where I saw him! Veronica Mars…

  • Brett
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:24 pm

Young Allison really reminds me of Brittany Snow from American Dreams.

  • Sheila
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:25 pm

Yay! Brett’s here! Do you all read Brett’s review at TVSquad? Don’t worry, I’ll link to it tomorrow so you can find it easily. :)

  • Jenn Bo
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:25 pm

Oh, speaking of Alec Baldwin (30 rock). Has anyone else seen the movied “The Cooler”. It has A Baldwin and William H Macy. I watched it last weekend. I think it was a small release / independent film… We liked it.

  • Jenn Bo
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:27 pm

I read TV Squad (I think from your links). He writes good analyses of eps/shows.

  • Sheila
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:30 pm

    “It’s me, not you.” Ack!

  • Sheila
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:32 pm

You know, I am not so sure Brett is a boy, JennBo. Brett? Are you a boy or a girl, oh you of the androgynous name?

  • Sheila
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:33 pm

Oh, do NOT tell me there is cat torture in this episode.

  • Jenn Bo
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:33 pm

    Ew, mean next door neighbor.

  • Sheila
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:34 pm

You know, most serial killers start as animal torturers.

Excuse me, I am going to go throw up now.

  • Jenn Bo
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:34 pm

    Brett: My apologies….

  • Brett
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:35 pm

I’m a big hairy boy, with a goatee halfway down my chest if that helps paint a picture. :D

Back on topic, I had a feeling that the cat (Pablo?) wasn’t long for this world.

  • Sheila
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:35 pm

My cat was sleeping beside me but jumped up and got all freaked out when the cat started screaming on TV.

Guess it was a real cat voice.

    Ick.

  • Jenn Bo
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:37 pm

I’m with you Brett, that was a little predictable. Also follows Sheila’s comment that serial killers often start as animal killers.

  • Sheila
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:38 pm

Ha ha! Big hairy boy! Sorry JennBo and Brett for MY confusion.

  • Jenn Bo
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:39 pm

UGH, the mom’s lack of belief is awful!

  • Sheila
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:40 pm

Wow, JCW was right the other day. Peri Gilpin is mean and nasty!

  • Brett
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:48 pm

There are of course the usual problems with anything that plays with time. How does old Allison now know what young Allison knows, etc. I’m willing to forgive it.

  • Brett
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:51 pm

Oops, posted without finishing that thought. Willing to forgive the timeline weirdness because all the present day stuff is taking place in a dream, so it’s conceivable that not all of the details would be right.

  • Jenn Bo
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:54 pm

Who needs friends like that anyway!

  • Sheila
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:54 pm

NO! Allison and Izzy broke up!

  • Jenn Bo
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:55 pm

OOOH, she can change the world!

  • Jenn Bo
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:56 pm

    Can you imagine the guilt!

  • Brett
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:59 pm

Nice ending, although I was expecting Allison making a call to Izzy.

  • Jenn Bo
    Mar 7, 2007 at 10:59 pm

I liked that one… instead of bringing justice, she prevents the crime!

  • Sheila
    Mar 7, 2007 at 11:02 pm

Excellent way to wrap it up. You’re right, Brett, where was the make-up with Izzy?

Save the, uh, medium, save the world? No wait, don’t save the boy next door, save the world. That’s the ticket.

  • Jenn Bo
    Mar 7, 2007 at 11:03 pm

I’m off to bed. That was fun. Sorry for missing the last two weeks.

  • Sheila
    Mar 7, 2007 at 11:05 pm

My one regret: not getting to see what Joe is supposed to have looked like as a teenager.

Did you notice how they kept Stephen’s hair all greasy so, even though he is an adorable boy, he looked unwashed and sinister?

  • Sheila
    Mar 7, 2007 at 11:06 pm

‘nite JennBo! Glad you made it tonight.

I am off to be myself, peeps. My 10 minutes power nap, while lovely, just didn’t do much for me.

    Catch y’all later!

  • Dawn
    Mar 8, 2007 at 9:44 am

Okay, this episode took me a few minutes to figure out but once I did, it was a really good episode. I loved seeing Allison as a young girl and struggling with her abilities. It was interesting to see the part her mother played in shaping her. Peri Gilpin was great as the mom, and Jessy Schram was wonderful as young Allison. I love the way the writers have been changing things up this season and keeping it fresh and interesting. This season just keeps getting better and better, as does the show. Although I would have loved to have seen the young Joe and seen what he was like.

As a side note, I saw that the ratings for this week’s ep were up from the last couple of weeks, and I hope this is a good sign for the show’s future.
