Patricia Arquette in Parade Magazine

Our favorite psychic mom appeared in the December 4th issue of Parade Magazine.
It’s a great interview. Some important highlights:
When Patricia Arquette of NBC’s Medium arrived at this year’s Emmys, she was painfully aware she’d be competing with such formidable actresses as Glenn Close, Mariska Hargitay and Jennifer Garner.
“It was crazy,” Patricia recalled. “I just thought I’d lose gracefully and then go out and party.” Instead, she won the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series—a rare achievement for someone who had never before worked in a television series. Ms. Arquette called me recently to talk about her hit series—an unheralded midseason replacement show that won over the critics and aced the ratings.
On Medium, Patricia portrays Allison DuBois, the real-life wife and mother from Phoenix who is also a psychic apparently able to communicate with the dead who assists law enforcement to solve crimes. Does Patricia really believe in her character’s abilities?
“I believe that she has a connection,” she answered. “Can crime-scene investigators really solve all those cases? Television let’s you do anything. Otherwise, all we’d have would be wall-to-wall reality shows. Do we want that?”
Such remarks flow naturally from the child of a theatrical family: Patricia’s grandfather, Cliff Arquette, for many years portrayed the character Charley Weaver on TV. Her dad, Lewis, was on The Waltons and Seinfeld. And her siblings, Rosanna, Richmond, Alexis and David are all in the business too.
When did Patricia first suspect Medium —a show she calls “cool”—would be a winner? “Since I didn’t know television, I didn’t understand the numbers,” she told me. “But then people began to come down to the set to say, ‘Hey, do you guys know how great these numbers are?’”
And although most of Patricia’s acting work has been in films, she seems to be quite satisfied right now with her role as a TV psychic. “The juiciest movie roles go to actresses in their 20s or in their 50s,” she said. “These days, TV is writing better roles for women.”
Patricia Arquette lives in Hollywood with her current love, actor Thomas Jane, their daughter Harlow, 2, and Patricia’s son Enzo, 16, by actor Paul Rossi. Patricia is known mainly for her films, such as True Romance, Ethan Frome and Lost Highway. In 1999, she co-starred with then-husband Nicolas Cage in Bringing Out the Dead. Had she ever been onstage? “Only once,” she answered. “I did a one-act play for one night only at a one-night charity gig.” Despite her busy TV schedule, Patricia worked for a group called Relief Spark when Hurricane Katrina hit. “Our show, Boston Legal, CSI and other shows got involved,” she said. “We don’t raise money but we send specific things people need—cots, tarps, sleeping bags, tents. We sent cleaning products and 450 brooms. We even sent Halloween costumes for little kids who have nothing. Don’t think, just because the government is on the case, that we can relax.”
