I don’t think they should focus too much on the kids personal lives next season, unless it’s in the context of them dealing with their gifts. Too much of the family drama takes away the suspenseful aspect of the show, and that’s what made it so great in the first place.

I was having a discussion with someone about this this weekend and we were comparing the three seasons so far and ranking them. He said he liked season 2 better because of it’s darker, edgier feel and I agreed, to a certain extent. I think this season has focused too much on the family crises and crimesolving and not enough on Allison’s abilities. What I mean is, in the first two seasons, we saw Allison’s struggle to cope with her abillity and balance her various roles. And we still see that, but the characters all seem to have gotten complacent about it. There is no conflict within it anymore, and as compared to the first two, this season just seems to have lost its edginess. And he commented that they seemed to be making Allison a superwoman. You know, supermom, supercop? Anybody else think so?

Don’t get me wrong. I loved it, but it just felt different to me, and I hope that next season they get back to that earlier tone. It adds to the suspense and makes the characters’ more believable. What do you all think?

Personally, I think the 3rd season has been the best season yet! Allison is evolving with her gifts and her family is learning to accept that and after 3 years of Mom working for the DA, they’ve gotten used to that to a certain extent.

Joe has grown in his acceptance of Allison’s abilities, although he still has his doubts like in the episode that just aired(on Lifetime) where Allison believes Marie will die from Leukemia in 20 years. They don’t fight as often about her abilities and the time her abilities and job take her away from the family like they did at the end of season 1 and the beginning of season 2. Now most of the fights are centered on things happening with the family.

We must give GCC credit for including these family dynamics in the show because most American families face that regardless of what jobs they have, most families now have both parents working outside the home and juggling kids and their activities and conflicts that come with growing up as we saw with Ariel and her savings account.

We continued to learn more about the personal lives of Scanlon (Scanlon longs to be part of a couple and have kids) and Devalos (Devalos regrets not having spent more time with his daughter), but not so much that it took away from Allison and the crime solving.

Season 3 ended with a clashing of Allison’s abilities, public perception, a case that for the first time took 3 episodes to solve, and Scanlon and Devalos having to choose between their loyalty and friendship to Allison and their jobs and a future in law enforcement. Certainly setting things up nicely for an exciting fourth season.

If the series stayed the same season after season with no new challenges or real changes, people would become bored with the routine, but cleverly, GCC has kept things evolving.

Kudos to the writers of Medium for the fantastic storylines and all the twists and turns they incorporated this season!

You’re right, Betty. I do agree that this season was great. And I love the family and the way they include them in the stories and make that such a part of Allison’s struggle. But what I mean is, Allison seems to have gotten too complacent about her gift. They all seem just seem to take it for granted now, that she has these visions and sees dead people. But I just think there should continue to be some reservations and moments when she isn’t really sure about what she sees and what it all means. I know it’s natural that she will come to accept this as a part of who she is, but I don’t think she should become too accepting. It would make her seem too arrogant and all-knowing, if you know what I mean. How many times this season have we heard her say “I know what I saw” or “I know this is going to happen”?

I just think there should be moments when she is wrong, or has a moment of self-doubt. I think next season should see Allison have a crisis of conscience or faith. Something to really shake her up and give the show back its edginess. I hope this outing will do that. And don’t make her such a supercop. How many times this season did we see her going to crime scenes alone or fighting off bad guys? She’s a housewife and a part-time consultant, not a trained cop. You know what I mean?

Personally, I loved this season. I think it had some of the show’s best moments yet, like The One Behind the Wheel; Four Dreams; Be Kind, Rewind; We Had a Dream; Better Off Dead; and the whole storyline with Allison being outed and Joe’s trauma and the marital stress was brilliant. But overall I’d rank it just behind season 1 and just slightly ahead of season 2. (You see, I love ‘em all for different reasons, and it’s hard for me to pick one as the best yet, but if I had to, that’s the way I would rank them.) I’m just saying.

Anyway, that’s what I’d like to see happen next season. Anybody else got any ideas?

I agree with both of you guys. I love seeing Allison’s family and their struggles. When they do it right it makes for what, in my opinion, are some fantastic episodes. The show has went through what is a natural evolution. Allison, her family, and the people she works with have become comfortable in their positions and how they deal with what Allison brings to the table. However, I do believe that it is time, especially with the outing, for everybody to loose some of their confidence.

This is going to make everybody question their lives and how they live them. I think that eventually things for the most part (except for everybody knowing about Allison) will go back to normal. In the beginning of the season, though, I think we’ll see Allison question herself as much, if not more, than she did in the first season.

As for Ariel getting a boyfriend, I say why not? I can see them making a really cool side story where she sees something that might happen to him, but she can’t tell him. Also, on the same note, I want to see more of how the kids are going to deal with how Allison has been outed. In the season finale we saw her crying after someone said Allison got the answers to a test from a boy who had died. What else is going to happen? I’m very excited to see that all play out.

As for which season I like the best, that’s a tough one because they all are quite different. Probably the first season is my favorite, closely followed by (very closely) by season three, and then season two (I like this season, but I think that there were a lot of episodes that could have been better).

I love Medium, and I can’t wait to see how all of this is going to play out!

My thoughts exactly, Holly. I like your comments too. I think next season should be very interesting, and I agree that the outing could make Allison start questioning herself. I would like to see a little more of that self-doubt that she had in season one.
