Pushing Daisies Premiere Review
Well, Pushing Daisies may sound similar to Tru Calling when you read the blurb, but all similarities end there. There is a sweet feeling to the show with slightly dark undertones, kind of like a fairy tale. Despite, or because of, his gift, Ned, the main character, has a childlike attitude of wonder. I felt like dancing through the daisies myself once or twice as I watched him romp with his dog. There were darker elements, even murders, but they seemed similar to the wolf in Little Red Riding Hood. The characters are quirky and likable.
I keep coming up with adjectives and comparisons because Pushing Daisies reminds me of something and I can’t put my finger on it. The Stupids, Because of Winn Dixie and Holes blended together, maybe? Anyway, it is definitely a show that should gain some diehard fans, since it has the appeal of Six Feet Under without the adult content. I’m doing it again, aren’t I?
The first episode starts by filling us in on Ned’s past and the rules of his gift. The most important rule is that he can’t keep someone who has died alive for longer than a minute or someone else will die to take his or her place. (Oops, sorry, Chuck. Your dad is dead, but Mom is alive again.) When he is older, Ned, a piemaker, meets up with a P.I. who wants him to help solve murders. All goes well until the corpse is Ned’s beloved Chuck. He can’t send her back and the funeral director dies in her place.
Chuck doesn’t know who killed her, so they have their work cut out for them as they search for the killer. Mayhem and murder continue, but the team finally solves the murder, although Ned’s poor dog never does get a good scratching behind the ears from human hands. (Yes, it is Digby, the dog from Ned’s childhood. Digby will live forever as long as Ned doesn’t touch him.)
This really is a cute show and worth watching. Catch a rerun if you missed the premiere and let me know what you think.

I always approach shows that receive tons of press with caution because they rarely live up to the hype, however, I do have to say I LOVED this show! They are quirky, but not trying too hard to be that way - it is just the way they are. Very sweet show - how nice to have a show concentrate on other ways to show someone you love them than jumping in the sack! I watched the premier twice and loved it both times.
My only concern is for Swoosie Kurtz - I love her as an actress, but I’m concerned for her health - she looks positively anorexic - that last scene when she and her sister (with a matching personality disorder) were leaving their home, her legs looked like bones with skin on them.
