Medium Dreams

Who Else Likes Medium?

by Sheila on March 6th, 2007

Paula Paige at TVGuide puts in her two cents about last week’s episode We Had a Dream

Drop on by and give her a shout (if you haven’t already, oh you of the familiar names I see over there.)

My apologies for today’s paltry post. It is a slow Medium news week. Would it kill them to go out and get drunk in public every once in a while?

At least Wednesday night is almost here - hooray!

9 opinions for Who Else Likes Medium?

    Hey, Sheila
What do you mean it’s a slow news week? Haven’t you read this week’s TV Guide? No, not the website, the actual TV Guide. It was great to see Medium get mentioned a couple of times. Besides the Ausiello Report, which we’ve already talked about, the one about CBS waiting to pick up Medium if NBC cancels (which I’m not entirely sure I put too much faith in. After all, it did come from Ausiello), there was also a Cheer in the Cheers&Jeers section for Medium’s Valentine’s Day episode. The writer called it twisty and a refreshing change of pace, and said that it showed the spirit of Medium was “still alive and kicking”. Although I do have to disagree with their assessment that Medium is tired and stale. They didn’t actually say that, but it was implied. And I love to read Paula’s blogs every week. She’s hilarious.

It’s a sad state of affairs when people who are good parents, good spouses who respect and love their partners, and good kids who respect their parents and peers are considered unworthy of publicity. Only those who are cheating, anorexic, or otherwise in need of rehab or some other form of counseling are deemed worthy of the almighty press.

It’s also sad that NBC spends tons of time and money advertising less worthy television fare than “Medium” and its fine cast of award worthy actors.

I was terribly disappointed in the Lifetime Televsion Network last weekend. I saw on the TV.com site that “Four Dreams” was going to be airing on Lifetime on Mar 3 and Mar 10, so in anticipation, I looked up the Lifetime network website, only to discover they still have “Medium” listed as coming on Sundays at 11 PM - which was about 2 time changes ago since it was on Mondays at 5 PM for a while. They didn’t even mention which episode was going to air on March 3.

To add to my frustration level, Saturday evening, I eagerly awaited 10 PM CST for the first part, so I tuned into the Lifetime network and watched the movies they had on preceding “Medium” and did not see one commercial, hear one voice-over, or even have one of those annoying banners come up to advertise this great two-part episode.

Yea, it was finally time for “Medium” and I was so excited since this is the one episode I haven’t got on tape. It was even better than I remember. However, they kept putting up banners advertising all sorts of other programs. When Part 1 ended, do you think they showed any previews for the coming week? Nope, not a one. Just “to be continued” on the screen. If I had turned away for one minute, I would have missed it and thought they left me hanging if I wasn’t familiar with the show.

I am very disappointed in NBC and the Lifetime network for their lack of support. Isn’t it a sad commentary that if one of the stars had been arrested for DUI, DWI, or caught cheating, partying till all hours, they would have it on front and center. Perhaps Patricia Arquette needs to use that bad stylist of hers and go out in some of the gosh awful ugly dresses, at least we’d be assured of her picture turning up somewhere on a worst dressed list.

Betty, how can you say that? I’ve actually been shocked that with all of Patricia’s appearances at awards recently that she hasn’t turned up on any worst-dressed lists. The sad thing is that she still doesn’t get mentioned anyway, not even for her clothes. And you want to hear something funny? I don’t think she has a stylist. I think she chooses her own clothes. That’s sad. But you’re right. It is sad that only the ones who cheat or drink and do drugs or get arrested get talked about in the media, and all of the others are ignored. That is a sad commentary on the state of our society, isn’t it?

I couldn’t agree with you all more! I, too, stayed up Saturday night to watch part one of Four Dreams (I didn’t have it on my DVR, but I do now :) ) and there was no advertising for the show. I read on a message board somewhere that someone didn’t even know that they could catch the second half of the show in a week! If they really are paying what Ausiello says they’re paying for Medium, I would think they would put a little more into their investment.

I finally read the article in TV Guide (at the grocery store, I’m not actually going to buy the magazine) and from what the person from CBS said, I didn’t get the vibe that they wanted to pick it up (I think they said something like their priority is their schedule). It would be great if it was true, but it’s probably him just making stuff up!

I try to catch Paula every week. It’s great seeing reading positive reviews of the show.

Holly; You’re right. I didn’t get the impression that they were too intent on picking it up either, because they said their “priority is to their schedule first, not a show’s profitability.” How he got that they were waiting to pick it up out of that, I’ll never know. But as I said, it did come from Ausiello, and we all know how he feels about Medium. It seems like the only time he mentions it is when he can put a negative spin on it. After all, he is the one who started the rumors a couple of months ago about troubles on the Medium set. And I wouldn’t be surprised if he was the one who started the rumors about Jake Weber being unhappy with his role. That’s just my opinion.

And I wanted to clarify something I said earlier. I didn’t mean to imply that Patricia deserved to be on any worst-dressed lists this year. I thought she looked beautiful at all of the awards shows this year, especially the SAGs. I think she looks beautiful all the time, even though her taste in clothes is questionable now and again. Though it has gotten better as she has gotten older, don’t you think? What I was saying though, was that she always seems to end up on the worst-dressed lists even when she doesn’t deserve it.
    Just a thought.

Sheila: I’ve been reading about this on another board, and I wanted to get your opinion on it. There’s a thread at the Envelope at LATimes.com called Primetime Emmys and everyone is picking who their favorites are for Emmy nominations this year (just talking, I know it’s way too early), and a lot of people are picking Patricia to get a nom. So here’s my question, if they use the tape-based system, which they have in the past, what episodes do you think should be Patricia’s Emmy submission tapes? Any thoughts on this?

One more thing. I think Jake Weber deserves an Emmy nomination as well. Any ideas on what his submission tapes should be?

Hey, Sheila, forget what I said earlier about the Emmy nominations. Looks like Patricia is gonna get screwed AGAIN! Just read at the Envelope that the Emmy Academy is changing their submission rules AGAIN. Acccording to the poster, who is supposedly someone on the inside, the submissions will be based on a combination of popular votes and a judging panel, among other things. Sounds like it’s going to be another year of Grey’s Anatomy and Lost and whatever other show is getting the buzz. What a crock! I know this sounds like sour grapes (and I guess it is a little) but why bother handing out awards for “Outstanding Actor/Actress” or “Outstanding Comedy/Drama Series” if it isn’t based on actual talent or hard work. It may as well be the high school dance all over again, and they’re voting for the most popular for king and queen. That’s what it all comes down to. Okay, I got that off my chest. I’ll drop it now.

Dawn: Oh barf. I am late catching up on comments today and was just about to head over to The Envelope and check it out. Thanks for heading me off. But what an excellent poll question! :)

P.S. You mean I have to go out and buy the print version of TV Guide to get all the Medium news? Argh!

Sheila: I guess you’ll have to read both the print version and the website, because I find stuff on both. Like today, there’s a feature in the interviews and features section on Peri Gilpin, who talks about her role in tonight’s episode and how it came about. It’s actually pretty interesting. I won’t post all the details here but you should check it out. Also, don’t let me stop you from going over to The Envelope and reading what everyone is saying. There are several threads in there about the Emmys and it’s interesting to hear what others think. I know who I want to win the Emmy, but it’s nice to hear that others agree with me.
