Who’s Talking About ‘The Whole Truth’?

by Sheila on January 22nd, 2007

TVSquad thinks it was crap with a few shining moments (diamonds in the crap?) but still loves the show.

We (that’s you and me) talked a bit about what we did and did not like in the comments to the liveblogging post. Things that made me go “huh?” and other boggles:

  • Where were the girls? There was only one brief mention of the kids, I suppose to remind you they still lived there and Allison and Joe had not fallen into an evil alternate universe where children are not allowed.
  • I found it way too convenient Joe had a cold that kept him up at night so he could be available to help Allison figure out the “living caves” thing when normally she is up all alone in the middle of the night talking to dead people and figuring things out.
  • Why did Allison go looking for Jimmy all by herself out in the middle of nowhere? Isn’t it kind of dangerous to go wandering around a bunch of deep holes in the ground, holes you can possibly fall into if you are not careful? Which brings me to:
  • Does Allison have no friends? Is there not one stay-at-home mom she can call up and say, “Hey Betty, are your kids at school? Great! Let’s go have an adventure in the land of living caves. I’ll pick you up and we can stop at Starbucks on the way.” It would be a nice reality check, too: someone to look in the hole and say, “Uh, Allison honey? There’s nobody alive down there, girl.”

On the plus side, as commenter Holly points out, we did get to see Devalos all sweaty as he tries to stay one step ahead of his diabetes.

But what did you think of “The Whole Truth?” Did you love it? Hate it? Did it bore you completely? How could they have made it better?

    This episode was just so-so.

Sometimes, I get annoyed with Devalos constantly reminding Allison that “we both know that you sometimes make mistakes” as an effort to discourage pursuing something. As far as I can tell, Allison is generally on to something but sometimes needs to follow several paths to find the right answer. If Allison is, indeed, sometimes wrong, I think they need an episode that is truly a wild goose chase. Then, I’ll understand Devalos’ attitude.

There just wasn’t enough Scanlon in this ep! Why wasn’t he called to the crime scene, after all, he is the homicide detective, and then Devalos could show up after the family pulls strings. Why didn’t Allison take Scanlon with her to investigate the caves? This season, Joe needs to give up his “man card” as they say. First, he lets her go off in the middle of the night to meet that guy who happens to be a decendent of Dr Charles Walker and he nearly beats her to a pulp, and guess what? No Scanlon to rescue her and Joe letting her leave in the middle of the night to meet a guy who is being inhabited by his dead serial killer relative? Now, and I really didn’t like the ep, I kept thinking like Allison, “what is the point?”, but Joe lets her go to look for this kid, and like the previous poster said, she could have fallen in one of the holes and been trapped herself. Scanlon is such a hunk - we need more Scanlon! Besides, this season, Allison has that “drop dead stare” down when Scanlon says something like, “how do you know that” and she gives him the drop dead stare, like, “duh”, and he gets it - so cute!

The girls — They could have figured them into the show for a bit, but since they weren’t crucial to the plot, I’d think TPTB probably just decided to give them a whole-ep vacation off. I did notice that this seemed to be the first ep without the girls in it at all.

Joe’s cold — was convenient. And when he whipped out the map, I rolled my eyes a bit. But men do get colds! And know a lot about green caves! (maybe not)

Allison looking for Jimmy by herself — is something she seems to do all the time. She gets all worked up and doesn’t plan ahead (even if she ends up not being quite right). A personality flaw? If she keeps it up, she’ll probably get in a lot of trouble (which would be fun to watch, as long as she’s OK). Personally, I’d have brought along Joe, Scanlon, and the DA.

Allison having no close friends — I noticed this as well. Given she has this gift that can isolate her, this may make sense. Besides Joe and her kids, Scanlon seems to be her best friend. Maybe they’ll go shopping and do each other’s hair in a future ep. ;)
